Trolling Near Charleston Jetties Question

What would be the ideal setup (bait, tackle, rigs) for trolling by the Charleston Jetties. Also what would generally be caught while trolling. Should I use artificial or live bait?
Thanks

This time of year you should try slow trolling live menhaden for kings. As slow as the boat will go. All of the shipping channel is good that way. Start at the jetties and troll out; just follow the cans. Diving plugs will work too, but the best way is live menhaden. Horse mullet will work in a pinch also.

Clark spoons or Hopkins behind small trolling lead on light set ups will catch you Spanish macs all day long

When you troll menhaden are you using planers with them? #1, #2, #3 etc? I really gotta get out and try different fishing methods and targeting. Doing the same thing every trip gets boring. Watching some of Sellsfish videos of catching catfish from trees intrigues me to get out and do something different.

spoons are good, gotchas are simple and heavy. read the new SWS article on spaniards. if you cant find Menhaden the world wont end. troll these and have a casting rod rigged at all times with a yozuri

good luck and many of tournaments have been won from the little dude trolling the shipping lanes. Troll the breakers also. current dancing by the n jetty for monster BAMA flounder can be fun too.

can you throw a 10 foot net. begin with articial unless you are skilled at hearing a tailflip. You cant allways find livies. everyone will say troll a live blue with a stinger but that’s not ideal all the time. you want to catch fish, not troll all day for one monster

We used to troll naked pompano jig heads tied to a double chicken rig no weight and would wear out the Spanish macks…That was in the channel inside the jetties of Panama City Beach, FL

New question for a trolling greenhorn. I’ve seen recommendations for using the Stretch 25s and Stretch 30s for trolling at the jetties. Wouldn’t that put you right at or on the bottom? Would you guys recommend a different diving plug? I would like to try one Clark spoon and one plug for comparison’s sake. Thanks.

not at the jetties. I may pull a stretch along the shipping channel but only with clearer water. stay live arpound the jetties

if I’m trolling I’m in at least 150 feet to be honest. I prefer to run and gun the Spanish and cast to them or raise spades, sheeps etc nearshore. I must say fishing stinger rigs with /out balloon rigs and menhaden , downstream of a frozen chum bag with some menhaden oil AND bottom fishing is good way to keep everyone occupied. I worked on capt ivans island charters in college and thats what he did. IMO he was the king of the king fish and still is
