What a nice day to be out! Left boat ramp at 6a ran 24 - 26 mph the whole way out. Came across a patchy weed line in 130’ and decided it was time to put lines out. I had just put the 5 th (last) line out when we saw a small sail chasing/batting at the port outrigger line. By the time I thought to grab the rod to drop the bait it gave up and disappeared. Cool start. Missed a couple peanuts that tried their hardest to get hooked. After a short quiet stretch I got my daymaker. Right outrigger pops and line starts screaming of my tdl15, and a nice sailfish is greyhounding across the flat sea. Got it to the boat after a nice fight, grabbed the bill, got the hook out, dragged to revive for just a few secs felt a little kick and said “thanks for playing”. Did not see it in the spread just heard the rigger pop, medium ballyhoo on a wire leader.
A barracuda and a 25# wahoo was it for the day , but still calling it a great day!, ran back in at 25+ mph.
Good job! We got a nice sail on wire a week ago trolling for wahoo at the ledge. Seas were amazing friday so glad you got out to enjoy . We went 1/2 on wahoo and worked a nice weed line but nada in 175 ft. Bottom bite was a bit off but such a nice day hard to complain.

Yes that was us. Seas were so nice , got to the buoy well before sunrise and bait couldn’t find the sabikis in the dark. Fortunately we had someone demonstrating better technique…

Nice triggers! Poor mans lobster. I figured those we’re triggers hovering off the bottom where y’all were at. Im no expert on them but I find that once you get one to bite, they get in a frenzy. Two Gerrys discount tackle 4x strength number 1 circles on a chicken rig 10-20 cranks off the bottom. Tiny pieces of squid. Theres a great trigger burger recipe in the cooking section if you haven’t tried it you should. This was last weeks haul.

DF, we target them more or less. We use small sturdy hooks, small pieces of cut bait up off the bottom, look for the trigger “marks” on the sonar. However, I did catch a few on live bait.
Kudos!
Tried trigger fish 40 years back when the commercial bottom fishing boat on Edisto couldn’t sell them and just give them away. Beautiful pure white flesh was as good as anything that swims (except maybe blue crabs).
Cool, my first trigger came while yellowtail fishing in the Keys, we’ve caught a few since then the same way. Squid on small hooks free-lining off the stern. My oldest caught a nice Queen a few weeks ago bottom fishing with DGYF34. One of my favorite fish to eat.
