I like the swimming plugs versus the planers. Planers work great, but once you get to a certain size planer, your gear has to be so heavy and the drag so tight to tie inline, just not my cup of tea. I use up to a number 2 tied inline before I go to a cleat and bust out the rubber bands.
Someone mentioned the poormans downrigger, and they work just fine. If you were to buy one in a set, they come with that yellow nylon rope, a planer, and a pack of rubber bands.
Give me a spread with a couple clemson plugs in it. Those catch fish when nothing else will. (that and a drone on a downrigger)
Don’t touch me there
BOATLESS!!
If you’re using the swimming/diving plugs as a planer substitute, are you doing off one rod in line; or the diving plug on a seperate rod, and then how do you attach the line/lure you’re fishing with?
Thanks in advance. i was looking at trying that set-up late next week.
I was thinking the same thing about planers. I used them last week for inshore spanish and you had to tighten down the drag to just pull #1’s and #2’s. I was thinking the whole time I was out there draggin them that eventually a king was gonna hit one of those spoons and be gone with the drag set so tight. I will probably buy a couple of the #4’s and make me some poor man down riggers and be done with it.
Seriously, with the drag set that tight what other fish, besides spanish and blues, do you have a chance at holding on the hook at such tight drags?
