I’m just starting to fish for Kings in Charleston, just wondering how many of you use planers to run a bait a little deeper. I have always run my skirts on top when I caught them, but my boat is not exactly the best trolling platform and running a planer will let me troll ann extra bait on top. Not using the planer the most I could troll would be 2, using them I would try 3 baits, maybe 4 if it all worked out and I could keep everything untangled.
If you use a planer to run one deep instead of a downriggers is that what you are asking. I would try a spoon with your planer you would would be surprised what you catch with a spoon. If the boat is not as you call it a good trolling platform three baits are fine the fish are there or they are not in your spots. Hope it helps

Yes, that is what I was asking. Unfortunately I don’t have a downrigger. I run spoons and planers when I go after Spanish, never got a king on it though. Might be because I am using pretty small spoons though.
Try a #4 planer with a 3.5" Drone spoon on 30ft of 100 mono behind the planer.Run it down til you can’t see the spoon flashing. You will catch lots of fish if you are near bait schools offshore.Short strikes don’t affect the spoon and the planer is simple and fast to redeploy.

We had some success recently trolling cigars on #2 planers.
Ran out of bait and put a spoon on the planer. Only had one short runoff after that.
Thanks for the info guys, I plan on going out to the 60 reef on Saturday and troll around there.
see ya out there Scoobie I will be in the area 75ft plus what we are shooting for. Give me a call VHF 65 happy hooker. See ya out there

#4 planer and a 3.5" Drone spoon is now in the boat. I’m blaming you if I don’t catch anything!
Now you’ve gone and got me stressed out!Good luck. We’ll be out there Sat doing some btm fishing.

Instead of fooling with the planers I would pick up some stretch 25’s red/white have been good. The 25’s will get way down and they are just easier to use then a planer. Good luck.

I’ll have to take a look at those, never used them before.
Planer & spoon brought the first King of the day in the boat. Put it back out and about 15 minutes later something hit it and took the whole rig. Wish I could have gotten to try it out a little more, but I’ll call it a success since the fish really seemed to like it.
Sorry you lost the rig.Probably a cuda or shark hit the planer after it missed the spoon.Easier target.Try a little wire cable above and below the planer next time. This has happened to me,but not often. Also try soaking new planers or trolling weights in sw or mark with a sharpie to keep them from being shiny.

Did you mean Stretch 30’s? The Stretch 30+ will dive very deep and are much larger than the Stretch 25s. The Stretch 30 is 10" long, has a 3" lip and about 1.5" in diameter. The Stretch 25’s don’t dive nearly as deep IMO.
H&T
I paint my planers with flat black paint.
Never had a fish cut one off before.
If it is new and shiny, the cudas will hit it just like a spoon.
2nd the stretch 30’s. The 25’s are ok but don’t work as well with heavier line or faster trolling IMO.
Caught a king on planar with cigar minnow this weekend
have a picture but dont know how to post, will send to someone to post
check your PM box I’ll hook you up!
this is for fishhunt6 sorry for the small size. Nice fish

OK, so how do you connect the fishing line to the lure?
I figured this seemed as appropriate of a place as any to post this, sorry to hijack the thread. I am about to get a few new planers, looking at #4’s as mentioned above. Sea Strikers web page shows a #4 and a #4 braced. What is a braced planer and what is its purpose? I like to run the planer off a cleat using the rubber band method, will nylon rope be to heavy for a #4? This is not a high speed set up by the way.
