Figured I’d post a report, since there’s been a bit of discussion lately about trolling.
Normally, this time of year, I’d be trolling after dark, but the bite seems to be better lately just before dark. I’ll probably give after dark a try again next week after this full moon is out of the way.
Without fail, the fish are suspended in the river channel about 55-65’ late in the evening and biting pretty well during that time.
The best bait for me lately is a 7" Blue/White F18 Floating Rapala.
JMO, but I would definately get away from using urigs when the fish are this deep. I never use them, but between the normal blowback of a cannonball at these depths and the additional pull of the weight of a urig, I can’t imagine how you can have any confidence in the depth you are fishing.
I would try a single plug. I’d much rather have one bait in “the zone” than 8 baits on a urigs 20’ above where you need to be. More fun fighting fish that way too.
I dont troll near modoc. Live bait only. Too much stuff in the water to get hung up on. I only troll by the dam and imo its best when the water is way down late august - late september

Thanks. May go to clarks hill this coming weekend and try some out there. Murray has not been good for trolling this summer. At least for me.
I was talking with a local at the Modoc ramp last Saturday who was trolling around the O2 lines ...
He said that trolling (downriggers and leadcore) is his preferred method of fishing and he only managed 2 10" Stripers for the day …
He said that the trolling on Clark’s Hill is the worst he has ever seen it in recent years …
i took yalls advice last night and ran single lures rather than u-rigs. caught two 23" and one 24" within about an hour and half, and had two big bites on my ben parker but couldnt get the hook set.
I have a scotty electric downrigger that my uncle gave me. I have not installed it yet. I am going to do that over the winter this year. I think people on here use a cannon. I currently use lead core which has caught fish every summer and fall except this one.
I went today and also took superskiffs advise and trolled single bucktails. Caught 2 fish a 24" and about a 19 pounder. The 19 pounder is a big fish for me and I have a picture on my wifes phone I will try to post. He would not even fit in the cooler I had to put ice in the livewell and stick him in there. Caught both fish at 65 feet. Lots of floaters in the big pool. Big fish small fish and they all had that pinkish tint to them. It was a good day other than that. Thanks for the advise guys.
Superskiff today I fished 12 to 13 colors. Makes for a long fight when you hook a big fish but that gonna have to do till I get downrigger installed this winter.
