Trolling Speeds?

Waht speed or “range of speed” do you try to maintain when using deep diving rebels or the “Stretch 25’s”?
Thinking about trolling on Wateree this Saturday.
Have “live-baited” all week without much success.

2.5 to 2.8mph is my target range. Every now and then I’ll take it out of gear and almost stop before going again. Sometimes that works. Oh yeah, I like it rough when I’m trolling!:wink::smiley:

I agree completely, the rough water really seems to help

Hey guys, new to the forum here. I was wandering what would it hurt if anything to go slower. Just curious. I fish mostly Clarks Hill and typically try to stay around 1.0 to 1.5 w/trolling motor. Works pretty well but was wandering if a little faster would be better?

In my experience, it just depends on the fish. Sometimes they will hit going 3 to 3.2mph, and sometimes they will hit going at a snail’s pace. Then sometimes anywhere in between. But of course, I am no pro in any stretch of the imagination, so just try differnt speeds and presentations to see what is working at the time. Those pesky striper seem to change from hour to hour sometimes.

Are you talking live bait or lures/u rigs??

With live bait I use tm to stay under 1 mph but when pulling roadrunners, lures and u rigs I use my boat at a dead idle which is around 2.3 mph. I do like to stop every now and then and normally will troll making big S patterns as well

Well, with live bait I troll w/TM in a range of .75 to .90 mph, but with deep diving lures I stay around 1.5 mph. I figured if I troll too slow it would be better than too fast. When I first got my boat the dealer had the wrong size prop on my motor causing it to troll idling @ 3+ mph which I felt was too fast so I turned to my trusty trolling motor during that time. Started catching fish at 1.5 and been doing it ever since. I could still be doing myself an injustice though at 1.5. Maybe need to speed up a little. I did get the prop replaced with the correct one and seems to be fine now, but I still use the trolling mtr. Any thoughts on this?

Lynn just likes to go faster so he can cover the same circle more times in a straight all night extravaganza ; )

Ronnie or Lynn,

Have you heard of anyone catching any stripers in the Cooper River lately?
