Trolling Surprise

First time posting but long time reader. Went out late yesterday afternoon because of work. Trolled diving plugs around the channel looking for kings and then moved to some live bottom numbers in around 45 feet. Marked a school of fish and as soon as I turned around both rods went down and we doubled up on a nice pair of jack crevalle. Been fishing a long time but those were mine and my brothers first jack crevalle and it was really cool to get them doubled up on the troll. Spent the rest of the day getting worked by 40 to 50 pound class AJ’s on top water chuggers and butterfly jigs. Monster AJ’s and shallow water do not make for a good combination.

Have tried the kitchen sink on AJ’s some days and can’t get them to eat. Have a couple chauggers, etc and some large jigs. My question, i guess, is, do you have to use flouro with the lures to get the fish to bite? Seems like they are looking at my lures and just seeing that they are suspicious. At a loss. Nice jacks, by the way. We landed some about half that size slinging hopkins lures a few years back in the surf at Garden City in the late summer.

Thanks! We have had the best luck tying about a six foot section of flouro with a double-uni knot straight to our main line when it comes to the jigs and the topwater plugs.

I use cheap 80# leader for AJ’s. 2-3oz spro bucktail with a big plastic - all white. You can put it in front of them all day long and they wont bite. Drop to the bottom, jig up fast and they will hit it just about every time.

This, need to move it quickly and they will go crazy over it

Thanks Jughead.

glad to see another post of some healthy jacks pulled out our local waters. i remember you could chase them busting topwater all day long up and down CHS harbor in the 90’s; those days are gone. congrats again on the bite.

Any ideas on why they arent around as much anymore? I think i recall a newspaper article about some guy catching a record one off daniel island maybe a decade ago or more
