Trolling with Spinning rod?

I was watching a couple of Courtlands videos and ran across the one of wahoo fishing in Panama and all they had was spinning rods. So how many use spinning gear in their spread?

LOL. I’m guessing not many.

When we are jigging and move back up to reposition we will throw 1 or 2 of the lures that we were casting out for the return trip to start the drift. Even just a regular old jig will get em sometimes on the troll. I have caught wahoo and tuna this way.

The main reason i like to use them is the longer rods have more flex and definitely give more action to the lure than short meat sticks. Especially a lipped diver. Also you can immediately tell when you grab the slightest piece of grass on your lure because the pulse of the rod is so dramatic.

I sure do. Most of the fish we catch can easily be handled with a spinning rod and a lot more fun to me.

I think it would be a blast.

SAFMC you suck!

I’ve tried a few times with a waxwing on my pitch rod when we move back and forth on our drift spots alla what Courtland said… I haven’t caught anything but I always thought it had potential. I’ll keep trying

We always ut a Spinning rod out in the spread, lot more fun to catch those dolphin on a spinning rod and with the newer spinning reels they have 50 lbs of drag so can handle anything in the Charleston area where we fish.

Great for running lipped plugs close off the transom

I just picked up two Quantum Cabo’s and plan to troll with them. Drag can be set up to 65#'s on the 80, more on the 100.

I’ve done it a bit but since all my spinners have braid I use them differently. I keep two rods rigged with fluorocarbon leaders and circle hooks ready to pitch whole ballyhoos back when fish come into the dredge. Also when the bite is hot and the spread gets wiped, I will drop a hoo back on a spinner with an open spool while we land the fish we have on and 99% of the time it will have a nice dolphin on it. Also super handy to have spinners rigged this way for the common surprise cobia when bottom fishing. I fish 6500 reels with 50lb braid and 40lb top shelf mono.

I haven’t trolled with spinning reels in a while, but my first billfish was caught on a spinning reel.
