Heading to the ledge to troll for wahoo probably. Do you guys always put wire leader for them? I assume you would but figured I’d ask since I’ve never gone after them. Also are there any lures that seem to work better than others? Thanks for any insight. I appreciate it.
Wahoos shake there heads and often lures go up the line and that is when you get cut off by another hoo because they pack hunt and patrol the same area. A rubber band tide infront of the lure will keep it from sliding up the leader. They strike with their teeth to kill before they eat, they dont swallow whole like other fish, they intend to cut what they hit. They are very precise, watch some underwater trolling footage. They can come in at 50 mph and stop on a dime and turn down a bait. If your not highspeed trolling a blue and black or purple and black seawitch baited with a medium or large ballyhoo, a large x rap or yozuri bonita. Highspeed trolling people pull cow bells with no weight or skirted lures with inline weight. I like to have surface lure set way way way back in the spread like 250yds. Something with dark colors like purple, black or red with some flash like silver or gold. The dark color produce a findable profile to key in on and the flash can be noticed from a far. You will notice one of the more common things with a wahoo lures are dark colors, light colors are almost never the base color. People highspeed to find them by covering more water and to eliminate other non target bites. In a good area that has hoos, slowing down and putting out a spread with some meat can be effective. Ive seen wahoo leap out the water on surface lures, so it doesnt all have to be deep. Like Floridaboy said plenty of hoos caught on mono but its known as hero or zero so people like to really stack their odds. Personally i like a mix of witches/skirted lures and deep running hard baits. I think most of the deep divers have some movement to them that could make a strike off target so i prefer wire on those. If your catching hoos the blackfin or bonita should be around and with a mono meat spread you get a lot more action from them. The best time to catch a wahoo is early am like first light, the clearer the water and brighter the sun the deeper you should try to target.
Get two yo-Zuri Bonita to throw in the spread rig with stainless steel cable…

This is exactly how I run my Yozuri Bonita. I think I run 250# cable but may be 400#. I started with 100# wire but in fear of kinks or the shaking of it eventually breaking thru the wire I switched to cable.
Thank for all the info. We may try our luck this Saturday. I have some yozuri bonitas and x raps to troll plus plenty of skirts. I’ll keep you posted.

If forecast holds true I would advise you to not go Saturday. The forecast overnight Saturday into Sunday is going to be really bad. That’s not somewhere you want to be stuck late in the afternoon Saturday if something goes wrong with 40-50 mph winds and 10’ seas coming in.
If the forecast holds the way it is, we’re going Sat, out of Port Royal. We’ll probably call it a day before 2, though, to avoid the weather that Florida Boy is referring to.
Yeah same here. We will probably start heading home about 2ish. We may not run all the way to the ledge and just do some bottom bumping and fish for some albies. LEaving out of N. Edisto
Do a final check on the weather before your 10 miles out and remember fuel consumption goes up in bad conditions. There seems to be a window but its definetly a gamble. I went out in a similar window like 2 years ago and forecast was off. No swell at all just 5ft chop. Over an hr to get in the harbor from when we could see the bridge. About 3 hrs from the gardens where we called it off. I use it as a lesson learned. The ledge was calm but getting to it ws the problem. Looks the opposite for saturday like nearshore is calm and the ledge is rough.
I can’t remember guys name, but Skinnee, Sells and Phin, older members will remember. Guy shot a window just like this in his Grady White and ended up sinking. He was saved but boat sank. Guys around here gave him a hard time for a long time.
I’m not running to the ledge. Going to stay within 100ft. Fuel isn’t an issue. I have 105 gallons. I’m calling it by 2:00 most likely. I’ll keep an eye out all week.
Being in a 22’ boat with a storm on the horizon where if it blows in 4 hours ahead of schedule is my fear. And 100’ is 40 miles, ledge is 50 or less in places. I’d stay within 60’ if it were me shooting a window. My plan is to go friday and start a couple hours late based on current forecast and I’m still concerned with the winds in that one.

That day changed the way i picked my windows,we were one of the lucky ones who made it back…nothing worse than hearing 2 madday calls of people you knew and there was nothing you could do but save your own ass.
Thanks Florida. I appreciate it. I ended up calling it Friday. From the looks of it we may have missed a good day but it’s fine. I’ve been on a boat that sank so I get how important it is to pick your days. Worst thing that happened yesterday was I made the wife mad for playing video games instead of cleaning the house while she was at work lol.
