one year old yamaha 115 4 stroke. Has run flawlessly. Yesterday was sitting at the sandbar and wanted to pick up anchor and leave. Turned the key, and not a single thing happened. the battery read 13-14 volts, flipped the battery switch a few times with nothing still.
Put the engine up and down, battery worked fine. Turned the key a last time, and STARTED. Darndest thing. The safety key was in and all. It was just odd.
I may replace the batteries at some point soon- they are getting up there (maybe 4 years)?
Does anyone have an idea what this may have been? How about new batteries- it has a “starting” and “deep cycle” one of each. Recommend the same or do both of the same type?
Thanks!
It may be as simple as corroded connections at the battery, even if they don’t look it. Your battery may be fine.
Everything other than starting your engine uses very few amps or fractions of amps which make it through a bad connection. When you try to start your motor you are using hundreds of amps. I think sometimes the heat that builds up in the bad connection cooks it a little, things shift and you temporarily get enough connection to do the job. But, if this is your situation, then the original problem will be back soon.

went out today and started/restarted probably 12 times throughout the day no problems. The wires from start switch to motor are new as of jan 20010. The wires from battery to engine may not be, though…which may be the issue.
Shifter may not have been in Neutral.

you know, loosewire, that is entirely possible. it was in the heat of battle with raising the anchor, and I may have killed it with the shifter slightly off of the neutral position. simple thing, but sometimes it’s hard to say if it wasn’t exactly in neutral. Good call!
Loosewire is dead on. I did know someone who did that and freaked out… Called sea tow and everything. HAHA easy mistake.

i doubt if its a battery issue
key switch, corrosion, in gear, something like that most likely
