I have a brand new 50 Yamaha 2 stroke engine on my 17 skiff and it takes me about 20 times cranking it to get it started cold I have tried everything with the choke, holding the key in, I make sure the ball is tight…but it still is a real pain to start cold… once I get it cranked for the first time it is fine all day…motor is brand new?? any tips?? Is there something I am missing?? It is still under warranty obviously, I took it in and they said it is fine and don’t mess with the choke when I crank it… anyone experienced this problem?
the yamaha carbed 2 stroke motor has a built in cold start function
you shouldnt have to do anything except turn the key, after pumping the primer bulb. dont rev up the motor
dont use the choke.
just pump the primer bulb, and turn the key.
if it doesnt start in 5 seconds or so, there is something wrong

If that one is like my 70, it has what I believe is called a prime start. Mine was bad and did the same thing until it was replaced. Just a thought, Chris V knows more about them then me for sure.
I have a new 50 two stroke and it was hard to start until I quit choking it and it got about twenty hours on it.Make sure the primer is tight.Just my two cents.
Good luck.
I have a 2008 two stroke yami 90 with 50 hrs. Like Chris V said. Turn the key. Even during the friggin cold weather it started without any choke in about 3 or so seconds. Don’t advance the throttle. I’m not sure the the old “press the key in to engage the choke does anything”. (standard yami key switch with safety connect) If I remember correctly I tried this thinking it would choke out the engine. Nothing happened. I could be wrong on this.

Thanks for the help guys

Yamahas out of the box need to have a sync & link performed; This is something the dealer should take care of when rigging. everyone is right about the simplicity of starting these engines with the thermal (valve)choke. If you are having issues I would lean towards a sync & link.
