Well, my SeaTow membership paid for itself yesterday when my fuel gauge suddenly dropped from about half to nothing, followed shortly by motor dying… $350 $0 to deliver $20 worth of gas.
should have noticed that I was getting pretty awesome gas mileage last trip or two:smiley:
I assume it must be a problem with the sending unit in tank. So seems testing consists of locating pink wire, ground it = full reading on gauge. anything else I should be looking for? If it is the sender, how do I go about finding correct replacement?
thanks!
Oh, and as a side note, is it customary to tip sea tow operators? Felt like I wanted to but didn’t have any cash.

Yes, at the tank, with key on, jumper the center terminal of sender to ground. If the gauge moves, then wiring and gauge is good and sending unit is bad. If gauge doesn’t move then wiring or gauge is bad. If so, run a temporary pair of wires from sender to gauge and test again. If that works, you’ve got a wiring problem. If it doesn’t, it’s the gauge. I’d bet on the sending unit.
The sending units are fairly standard. When you buy them they come long and adjustable, with instructions on how to calibrate them for your tank size.
I would tip the Sea Tow Capt if I had some cash. I seldom carry cash but when I go fishing I always try to have $20 or $30 with me for stuff like that, or for buying crabs from crabbers for bait, or whatever.
I am having some accuracy issues with my fuel gauge. Reading just about empty but only takes about 45 gallons to fill tank. I have a 75 gallon tank. Do you all think it is just in need of adjustment or is the sending unit in need of replacement?
WE RECCOMEND REPLACING THE ADJUSTABLE ARM FLOAT STYLE WITH A “WEMA” SENDER
YOU JUST MEASURE THE DEPTH OF YOUR TANK FROM THE TOP OF THE SENDINGUNIT HOLE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK
WE STOCK MOST COMMON SIZES, AND GET OTHERS THE NEXT DAY
