Has anyone ever tried using the small trout from the saluda as bait on lake murray. I would think big stripers would like them. I used trout as bait on Raystown Lake in Pennsylvania and caught some big ones.
They use em on lake Norman all the time. They even sell em up there. BB Herring seem to be the best though. Were trout a natural forage on that Lake in Pa???
There were a few tributaries with wild brookies. But mostly stocked trout. When the water got to warm in the streams they would go to the lake and get eaten. That was when the trout was good for bait. There were also lake trout, but I never saw any small ones caught.
As long as you catch them on hook and line they are legal and deadly.
I hear it’s done a lot in Saluda below the dam. Works too! Just don’t boast about it in company of trout fisherman. They get sort of bent about it. The TU forum has hot threads on that topic every year.

It is illegal to take them from the river to the lake. You must use them in the river if they are to be used for bait.

There is a local bait shop here in Anderson that has them from time to time (The Bait Shop on hwy 24). I have never tried them but they tell me they work.
