Trout Fishing

This might sound dumb but how do you actually trout fish? I just started to inshore fish this year and I think I am figuring out the red fishing, and occasionally when fishing I will catch a trout. How do you zero in on just these guys? What I am asking is do yall fish by docks, or on march grass? Popping cork or jig head? MM or artificial? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Best Technique I have had is to find a good shell bank with a good drop off. 5-10 ft of water. Carolina rig a live shrimp with a 3/8’s oz lead. Let it sink to bottom and keep it tight. If the trout are there then you will catch 1. DOA shrimp or the classic smoke colored metal flake grub work well too. Sometimes the artificial’s outdo the live bait. Last 2 hours of low tide and first three hours of incoming are my most productive ! Good Luck .

Key West 1720 115 HP Johnson Saltwater.

I’ve caught quite a few on a Gulp shrimp (pearl white or new penny), tailhooked under a popping cork.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

ELCID, go out at low tide and find some oyster banks. Then go back at high tide and fish them with everything from plastics on a gig just letting them drift with the current then try it under a cork. Try live shrimp they are like candy to trout. Don’t be afraid to move a lot and experiment and remember what you were doing when you catch one. One other thing I do is pay attention to where you see other people fishing. Most of the time those spots are fished because they are catching fish. I don’t mean slide in on people, just try it when no one is there. I have had people keep their distance and move in once I leave. Good luck.

ElCid, take him up on this offer. better yet, go by there and talk to him and Justin. you WILL catch more fish.

the doa shrimp have been the ticket for me (back in august)…however I did not use a cork, I just rigged them up and let them bump the bottom…did pretty well.

With the big trout freeze last winter the # of trout have really gone down this year

All my fishing friends and a # of captains are releasing trout and not targeting them for there outings

This last MONTH trout has really picked up and catching many more in the slot + range ( all mine are released alive)

So we have been giving the trout a big break this year

It is hard to release them - being the best tasting fish out there

Yea in not planning on keeping them, just want to know how to do it. I will defiantly be calling Captain Able today so I can try to learn a little bit of trout knowledge. Since it seems that the trout fishing is now picking up, can you fish for them through the winter, or do they slow down when the water gets real cold? Thanks again for the help

TRUTH!

Do ya’ll find that topwater lures are only effective during early morning/late afternoon. I was always under the perception that most predator fish would not attack anything on the surface in bright light. Of course I am wrong about a lot of things…or so my wife says.

I have found topwater can work anytime of day. While the really hot topwater action usually does happen early/late, don’t think a fish wont hit it at high noon too. I have had it happen too many times w too many species to think that. I caught my first topwater red at 1:30 pm or so on a really bright day.

Well that is good to know, I will have to pull one out and give it a shot. Thanks!

If you want alot of action from all sized trout use a poping cork and 20 inches of fluro with a live shrimp, if your cork doesnt go down in a minute move to another spot. I rarely fish bait and have been doing great with a gulp shrimp on a jig head, cut off the tail and rig backwards. I like to toss the jig up small feeder creeks on a outgoing tide and let the tide bounce them out of the creek, this is an excellent way to catch reds too:smiley:. If you really want to find some nice fish look around dock lights at night. Trout bite was on fire 5 out of the 6 days I fished last week. Good luck!
