hey guys, I’m headin to kitty hawk area for a week in mid june and I would like to try to get some trout on the fly. is this feasible on a 6wt??? I know that I’ll have to retie and change leaders and tippet and all that but I have a 6wt that I use for farm ponds and bass fishing on the lakes here. any suggestions on patterns to try? I’ve never saltwater fly fished before and I’d like to try to stay away from the bigger fish for fear of getting outgunned with a 6wt on hand. if anyone has any suggestions for the area my ears are turned on. I’m staying not far from the 158 bridge and I hear that the pilings hold good trout as does the grass in kitty hawk bay about 5 mile drive south of the bridge. whaddya think guys, am I dreaming or is it really worth getting the stuff together? thanks in advance everybody for any info/advice offered up.
The wind might be your biggest concern. If memory of history doesn’t fail me, Kitty Hawk is kind of famous for it’s wind. Hard to throw a fly in heavy wind with a 6wt.
I caught a 21 inch saltwater trout on a 6wt and found it had little stopping power. Most of the local trout I catch about 14-16 inch range and the the 6wt is adequate for those. Flies; trout LOVE a deceiver. The bigger the better.

6wt will be fine. Most trout are not screamers but head shakers instead. I’ve caught tons of them on my 5 wt on the grass flats. They loved clousers, especially in chartrouse(sp) also don’t overlook poppers, trout readily will hit top water.
I have fly fished the obx for years and you can definitely catch trout on a 6 weight down there. its all about finding them though. obviously the wind will have a big factor with a smaller rod. leaders dont need to be any longer than 8 foot. clousers are all you need to throw in a few different colors: black over orange with copper flash, black over red with copper flash, chartreuse and white, and olive over white. check out outerbanksflyfishing.com for more info

quote:Upstate, thanks for posting that link. I lost it a while back and for some reason I couldn't find it even with all my web-searching skills. "FlyGirl" is very helpful while you are on the water up there. She monitors 16 and many people check in with her about the day's bite.

I was impressed by how friendly and helpful all the people were on the flyfishing forums. Got some great ideas for flys from them.
