Hey guys,
I’m new to the forum and new to the inshore salt fishing world. I want to go out and catch some trout or reds. I fish a lot of salt water and know what to look for when I fobs it. My question is…what do you look for when you inshore fish. I don’t want to steal any spots; however, I would like to know what you guys look for, and maybe what you use in order to put meat on the table. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I fish a lot of fresh water** my bad
This time of year, tricky. I will let more successful people advise you on that.
For spring, summer, fall. Find a few good artificial baits and always give them a try, on every trip. Trout Tricks (from Haddrells and several other of our awesome local bait stores). Just jig them off the bottom. 3-4" curly tail grubs (white, dark grey/silver) seem to work well, and finally paddle-tail grubs-- my favorites. I have all three of these on rods, rigged, when I go. I also take at least one live-bait rod.
Live bait-- Learn how to net up finger mullet without losing your net on an oyster bed. Or, buy a mud minnow trap. Live shrimp is a great bait as well. Basically- fish them under 1) a popping cork with a 10-20" heavy mono leader… 2) On a carolina rig like a bass worm, or 3) on a 1/4oz jig head.
Dead bait-- mullet and pinfish fillets are often very good for redfish and flounder, occasionally trout. Especially if the water is murky.
Times/places to look. This is a huge generality, but when the tide is moving, beat the weedline and fish around structure like piers, sunken boats (lots of them around here unfortunately), etc. Start learning what the place looks like at dead low tide, and fish near oyster beds when the tide rises a little, especially at the mouths of creeks.
Whoops, almost forgot.
There are a lot of sheepshead around here. However, you can’t catch them. Only local folks with golden horseshoes up their rear are allowed to catch them. I’m not one of them. You can fish for them all you want, but you may not actually catch one. Just try. You will see.
Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.
Thanks redfish. I’m gonna try to go tomorrow. I’ll let you know how I do

One thing you don’t want to ever do is keep undersized, outside-the-slot, over limit, etc fish.
There’s a lot of good, knowledgeable guys on here willing to help but not a lot of tolerance for people breaking the fish rules or damaging the resource.
Let us know how you do. I’d be interested to hear if this cold snap has the fish hiding or hungry.
there is a lot of good information on this site for newcomers just use the search area, and do not pay attention to the crazy stuff the good stuff out weights it six to one… and welcome

I agree that the good stuff out weighs the crazy, but the crazy stuff can be very entertaining:smiley:

and for the negative… ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ to assume you would break state laws…
Rule of thumb for salt water. When the deer rut is strong, the spot tail and trout bite is super!!
This time of year since you said you know fresh water fishing. Fish the same as a for cold weather large mouth. Slow and consistent in deeper water.
Like a lot of others have stated, use the search function on this site and you would be amazed at the wealth of knowledge if you weed out the bull crap statements. You would think on a public fishing forum more people would enjoy eating fish. I’ve come to the realization that many on this site don’t believe fish should be eaten. Go figure? Those swimmie things are delicious. And super plentiful.
