Trout Question

I went out today and got into school of trout. Probably brought 10-15 to the boat, unfortunately they were all under 14 inches, quite a few at 13 and 13.5 inches. My question is are the bigger trout(14+) in with those smaller ones and I should just keep fishing the spot or is it likely the bigger ones won’t be around the smaller trout and I’m better off moving? Thanks!

I used to fish with a guy in florida that would take a super fluke with a heavier jig head and throw it in that situation. His thought was that the larger profile and more weight got through the smallies and that there were usually a few bigger trout hanging out at the bottom of the school.

I would carry a bigger bait as well. I like the Storm 6" Wildeye Swim Shad in Mullet color. A touch a Pro-Cure Mullet gel wouldn’t hurt. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the replies, any suggestion if using live bait?

Throw bigger live bait.

No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

Live Croakers, if you can catch some, are “Gator” candy.

Sounds like bigger bait will be the trick, am I doing the right thing by staying with the school or better off moving? I Appreciate the help.

If you’re using live bait I would use a heavier weight but would stick with the school and maybe fish the edges of the school

I’ll quote the legendary Bob Sanders quoting his mentor… “Son, a big trout won’t tolerate these little trout being around, let’s move”
