When do they usually spawn? Been throwing them all back since they are all fat full of eggs. Really miss trout in the pan.
Seems like first part of June is the time.
Full moon in May and on the moons until September. Barbawang might slap my hand with a ruler on that but thats my understanding

You got it, Opt!
SS, a fish with a full belly can often look a lot like a fish full of eggs… just find a grunting 16” or two and Bob’s your uncle
Or Robert could be your mothers brother…
Bob’s your uncle? The last time I heard that was in Alice Springs.

I just hope the trout have fun with lots of reproductive activity !
Good on you to consider C&R during spawn!!! I personally like, and now subscribe to, Optiker’s practice of not keeping trout over a certain size (+20" I think) regardless of the time of year…I hope I didn’t get this wrong. I’m just a rookie, and only have caught 3-4 trout over 20" in my life, so I don’t have that dilemma to deal with very often!
Same here. Because of Optiker, my boat also operates under a C&R on all trout 20" and over. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t have to load the cooler to justify pulling my boat down to the salt from Lexington. Sure, every once in a while I’ll invite a few fish home for dinner but for the most part, we’re C&R the vast majority of the time.

It’s not talking crap if you can back it up…and nothing can back it up better than facts.

What is the above 20” rule / why to do it? The produce more eggs or spawn more often or something?
As I understand it, those larger fish are you brood stock. They are your more mature/more prolific breeders.

This is really great. I’m not the only one to practice this but I do preach it a lot. Just because the law doesn’t include an upper slot for trout doesn’t mean we can’t follow our own voluntary upper slot for trout.
The thought is that the larger fish have survived cold snaps, etc and have superior genes. It’s good for them to pass those genes along to the future generations. Plus, the amount of eggs they generate is exponentially more. Lastly, most trout over 20" are female.
