Trout Tricks

Nice Flatty Geronimo!

Fished last night with BOSN, and used nothing but Trout Tricks.

Got this 27"er, 8-10 trout and a couple ladyfish all on TT’s

Also had an upper slot red on a Spook Jr

Take a look at your gear as well. Feeling that trout bite is a learned skill. They can be very lite on the bite, so having a too heavy type rod and line can make a huge difference. I was subborn last night fishing with Optiker. I was throwing sapphire shines and Opti was catching trout 2 to 1 with the trout trick. Technique is spelled out on the package. Follow that and you will increase your chances a lot.

Nice fish there Geronimo. Hope I can get one like that tomorrow.

Optiker, did you happen to head out from around Virginia Ave last night around 5:30-6? That boat looks familiar…was slamming some trout on the TT under the 526 bridge!

Yessir, that was me; I’m pretty sure I saw ya in the “Tin Can” Did they have any size. Most all of ours were small, but plentiful and aggressive

Me and the tin can were holding it down…no real size to them, but they were extremely aggressive and plentiful. The bite was so aggressive that I ended up with half a dozen TT’s with no tail.

I love them, Who cares if they get hung and you have to loose a few jig heads. When you are catching 30 plus trout instead of 5 it’s worth the cost and time spent re rigging (which takes like 15 seconds.)

Went to Grayco on Monday and they were out. Guy there showed me something similar and tried that yesterday, but nothing, albeit water was rough and storm was coming. Went to Beaufort Boat and Dock and they had them. Will rig them out and try them on the incoming tide in a few hours.

Anyone know where you can get them in Columbia?

The shop down town near USC campus (can’t remember name, small, privately owned) has them.

Fished on the rising tide yesterday from low to high in little creeks off the Jenkins and Eddings creeks using nothing but the Trout Trick. I tossed it heads of little creeks, along grass banks that had oyster shells below, in little creeks, and nothing, nada, nada, nada. Fishing method was to toss, then a couple of jerks to get the worm upward, and then let it drop. Over and over and over. Not the first strike by anything.

DFreedom, Barron’s in Columbia has them.

Coasttal, I wish Raddaddy or Optiker would respond to your post. I’m not fishing right now and am not familiar with your area. Thanks, Bob

Coasttal, Since no one has responded, yet I will say I am headed to Edisto soon. I’ll be fishing main river creek mouths and current breaks on the main river. Of course I’ll talk with Raddaddy before I go, to get the scoop. It’s kinda hard to scout from Barnwell. Possibly the fish aren’t that far in. As one of my major mentors, Mr. George Bowman told me, “Son, if they aren’t there, nobody can catch them.” As always, feel free to give me a call to talk fishing" 803-300-2780 Bob

Bob,

I am fishing the other side of St. Helena sound from you closer to Dataw Marina. There are 4 main creeks, on the left, that come off the ST. Hel. sound as you come from the ocean. The last of those 4 are the Eddyings and Jenkins creek. I fish mainly off little creeks that run into these. I typically just drift with the current and use my trolling motor or power pole to stop me a bit as I cast over to the grass edges and little feeder inlets.

Thanks, did not know Barron’s sold them.

Two things I would suggest, one of which I think you have covered.

  1. I would suggest to keep moving. Work a bank with your trolling motor and cover as much water as possible, casting to any structure or current break. I think you have this covered based on your description and setup.
  2. Keep in contact with your lure. Yes the line should be semi slack to let it drop straight down, but that doesn’t mean you can have a few feet of bow in your line. Most people I think drop their rod too fast, giving a big bow. This is precisely when you need to be in contact with the lure to feel the hit, because that is the only time you will get a hit. Lower your tip slower and reel in so you are still in contact with your lure. You are expecting to feel a tick. Small fish will be very aggressive and you can’t miss it. Big ones can have a very light bite. I’ve been fishing with a handful of folks to don’t fish arties and have given them this tip and it has helped immediately, or, they don’t listen and never improve. I had the exact same problem when I started. Bob and Ralph would watch my line and say “you just missed a hit”. I did???

OK I have a third suggestion:
3. A TT on a 1/8 oz falls at about 1 ft/sec. So let’s say you are in 8 ft of water, you need to make you cast then count to 8 for it to reach bottom before you begin your retrieve. Most people reel in too fast after casting. Gotta be patient!

After that I’m almost out of suggestions!

^^^ This right here is excellent information Optiker.

My problem starting off was counting too fast, so I switched to the tried and true “mississippi” method…man, what a difference!

Thanks for the info, Optiker!

Looks like I’ve been retrieving way to fast and allowing too much bow in the line.
