This Sunday I took a kayak trip with a couple friends to the Wando River. The three of us got to the landing at 8am to catch the 8:30 tide change. It was overcast and roughly 42 degrees when we got to the ramp. I’m newer to kayak fishing with only 1 good season under my belt so I’ve been reading lots of threads on this forum.I came armed with some green gulp baits and a couple dozen mud minnows. We put in and started off up the river and the bite was dead until the tide changed. I had a gulp bait on a 1/4oz jig head and something kept taking it but I couldn’t get the hook set. I finally reel it in and it came up missing a tail. I decided to change to a smaller jig head. I casted to the same spot I got a small trout. On my other pole I re-tied a smaller hook on my carolina rig, casted out a mud minnow and set it in the rod holder. NOTHING… I wasn’t about to be disappointed so after 10 minutes I changed spots. Finally got a fish on the minnow. I changed spots and caught another fish, changed spots caught another fish. This went on for most of the morning. I kept to 5-6 ft of water and casted towards the shoreline. At one point I went 3 casts for 3 fish on the gulp bait. I only had 1 trout over slot, but threw it back. I mainly catch and release. Caught him on the mud minnow, he hit that HARD!!! Overall I had 11 trout in the kayak by 2pm. That’s more than I caught in the last 2 years so I’d say it was a good trip. Thanks for reading.
