Went kayak fishing this morning to try to catch some trout but couldnt keep one on. I could feel it hit my bait but it wouldnt bite it to where the hook was in its mouth. I was hooking shrimp through the tail and fishing it on the bottom. Last time i didnt have a problem catching any but today i did. Do yall have any tips on how to keep the hook in them? Thanks for any advice!
sure they were trout and not small blues?

In general, trout hit the head of a shrimp. That’s why most of us put the hook in the head under the horn.

More than likely pin fish or small blues.

Im pretty confident they were trout considering I had fished there a few weeks earlier and caught and released 18 trout and i caught one the same day. But i could be wrong
If ya didn’t even hook any small blues, could have been yellow tails. Ya sure doing something right on the trout, I hadn’t been able to catch hardly any all summer, great that you’re releasing them. I caught and released 2 big girls today on a spook right before that big storm came in at Wadmalaw.
You can’t catch fish on a dry line
Carolina rig on the bottom with shrimp is how I caught them. at the mouth of a creek with a shell bank all along the marshline. Low tide.
What’s the story on keeping trout? I know the DNR asked for catch and release and I’ve been doing so but at what point are they finished breeding and is it ok DNR-wise to start keeping them again? Anyone know?

Thanks Optiker, I just sat down and was scrolling thru the DNR site to find that. Good timing! So, trout in September. Sounds good to me.
Switch to mud minnows, the pin fish and others won’t get them. if you come back with just the head of the MM the blue fish are getting you.

Any of you guides go after work for a few hours near Folly? PM me please!

for sure Pin Fish… I have noticed they will hang with trout at times… and they always strike short best way to tell throw a Gulp out there if you keep getting short strikes and come up with missing tails its pin fish and move on… if they were trout they would NAIL it, I have lost a few before cuase of a head shake and lost more on top water, for seting the hook and pulling the plug outta its lip but hey it happens
