I bought a 13ft kayak this past weekend, and I need some help with ideas of how to haul it around with my pickup (Dakota). I don’t have the funds at this point to purchase anything expensive so non-redneck racks are more of what I’m searching for.
I have a toolbox too that takes up an extra 1.5ft of the bed, which makes things even more difficult when it comes to building a rack.
you could make a 2x4 rack that fits the stakeside holes at the back
build it to the same height as the top of the cab
rest yak on cab roof on a piece of pool noodle and on rack
tie to front and rear of truck

i don't know if this will help, but if you go to Goose Creek High to the weld shop. they might be able to make you something for cheep. i know they are needing money to help send someone to the welding comp here in the next two months. you will need to go there in the morning like between 7 to 10 AM. that is when the teacher burgsteiner has the most time to look as see what he can do, and he has TA's that he can get on it right away.
i have a tacoma and got this to help haul mine around
works great and is very easy. my toolbox has a rail and i put ss cleats on it so i just tie the fronts in and then tie them in around the bed extender. there is also a harbor frieght store in charleston but i ordered mine online and got it in a week.
dippin, I’ve got a Nissan kingcab with a toolbox in the bed. Didn’t want to spend the bucks for a Tule rack. Endend up getting 1/2 racks from Yakima. One over the cab and the other at the end of the bed.
tie it to the top of the cab. get some ratchet tie downs and run them under the cab forming an “x” shape across the top. then drill two holes for eye hooks (seal it with silicone so the kayak wont leak) in the front and back of the kayak and run two more tie downs from both ends with one hooking to the bumper and the other the hitch. tighten them up until the kayak starts to flex around the cab and go. shouldnt cost you a thing.
