true 48 ?

what is your opinion of a true 48? ice or no ice? very, very little ice on top. I am thinking just two hand fulls of ice. but getting a full one is trickier some days than others. I am seeing a lot of 2 liter bottles of ice. missing out on that extra alfredo dish:smiley:

put frozen water bottles in the cooler…dump shrimp on top…know how many bottles you have in there and continue to shuffle them up through the shrimp as you fill your cooler…max out at 48qts and remove all ice bottles…shrimp will be plenty cold enough to pass “the man”…then just ice down liberally…

and can re use over and over again. don’t have to buy it or bring home from work. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm project cheap shrimp i like it.

To me, 48 quarts in when you have to mash down the lid on a 48 quart cooler with no ice, frozen water bottles, etc. I have seen a lot of pictures on here this year of a “limit”, but there was still room in the cooler for more shrimp. And some of these were pictures of the same type 48 quart cooler that I have. Now before y’all start, I understand that some pictures may have been taken before the cooler was “topped off”, and some people like to stop just short of a full cooler to leave some wiggle room in case they are checked by DNR, etc, etc, etc. This year I filled my cooler just over half full (by my guess) one night and the next night we had to literally mash the lid down to close it. When all were de-headed and packed in quart containers, we had 44 quarts. The limit is 48 quarts - 29 de-headed, why stop short if you are on them?

I like the spelling coolers, when you open the cooler the shrimp say igloo on top. In cooler water and a quick limit they will be fine

My 48qt cooler holds more than 48, so with a couple of bottles in it I feel safe to go through any DRN check

the have a box to check them, if you are over you get a ticket. Is one or two quarts worth it? some of you sound like the very reason we have limits now.

So we should all stop short of the LEGAL limit? So they can grow for next year? So there’s more for others to catch? Because I don’t know what 48 quarts is? Why stop short? The current limits are in place because of what was happening before the limits. People fighting, shooting at each other, etc. I live at minimum 2 hours from the coast. If I spend the money and time to drive down, I’m not stopping short if I’m on them. I will not knowingly take over the limit, though, no matter how hard they are running. To me, stopping short because I’m worried about getting caught over is the same as when people won’t pass a police officer even though he’s driving less than the posted speed limit. It makes no sense. Just saying…

quarter, third, half, or full, it is one of the best sports South Carolina has to offer, the eating with friends and family is where it’s at.
OBTW getting none is ok also, being on the water is the greatest!

I have always used two 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottom. When they get filled to the top that is my limit. I was taught this by an old timer, but I have never been officially checked.

We use a 54 or 68. Both have been pitcher filled and marked with a Sharpie for 48qt And we don’t pack them down. We start with 10# bag of ice still in the bag. Just move it up as you go. We lay it on top when full. You never have to worry limit all if you measured it out. Ice - about 6-8 yrs ago at the start of the season it was just after a 108 degree heat wave. Water like 90+. We lost some shrimp from a 3/4 full cooler not having enough ice!:imp:Had two 8# bags and the heat of the shrimp melted it all before we got to the store for more. We re-iced the top and thought the bottom was cool. It was not. Has not happened again - know that.

that’s a tough lesson, but a good pro-tip!

much better tip than a meaningless rant.

For those of you who use the commercial seafood or shrimp baskets (the orange ones), the 48 quart limit is not to the top. It’s about two to three rows of holes down from the top. You might want to measure you own basket. We put a partial bag of ice on top of the shrimp while catching them. If it’s warm we mix a few handfuls of ice in the lower portions of the basket to cool them. By the time, you’re done the lower shrimp are cool and there’s not lot of ice in there if your are checked. By far, the ice bottle method is the best way. If you have a bunch of ice in there and the man is going to measure your catch, dump a bucket of water in there to melt everything.

That extra packing of a cooler is not going to be worth the $440.00 fine per qt. you going to get for being over the limit. I’m sure DNR is not going to beat that container they use to measure with on the bow of the boat 48 times, as they check your cooler.

Plus who wants to eat smashed shrimp?

Seconded. Rather go home a quart or three of shrimp short than a paycheck short…
