More info on the new SC Truth in Seafood Act:
Great move. This one may be more difficult down the road. The restaurant lobby will not like this one, but perhaps it will let the public know the truth about how little seafood is actually local and all the restrictions on catch. I confronted a seafood store in your county once that was selling asain swai for $14 lb . It was labled “fresh local grouper” . The owner said that it was her fish and she could name it what ever she wanted, and that it was “local” because it had overnight residency in her freezer.
Thanks for the hard work.

I hate to hear that, but it further proves the need for this. Thanks.

It depends on the establishment…The high end places are all for it, and the slop houses / tourist traps are dead set against it. I have been pushing for this for years! Fraud is fraud any way you slice it. I only sell domestic shrimp, why should the store down the street sell shrimp from China / mexico / vietnam…and be allowed to sell it as local? I hope it passes the house, it will be GREAT for my business as well as our local commercial fleet (whats left of it).

I am a local commercial fisherman and I was raised on it. The last ten years or so it has been rough on all especially the shrimpers. A lot of times my dad was lucky to get 70 or 80 cents for 26/30 brown shrimp in the summer and the restaurants 100 yards down the creek get 10 bucks for a 1/4 lb appetizer. I hope this passes for sure.
and in todays news, I see where our local oysters are loaded with plastic fibre.Hmmm, and I was worried about storm water run-off.
Sure is wonderful we have the oysters filtering out our water systems. Most of the microscopic fibers were residue from synthetic clothing found in oysters all over the world.
What we need to do is go after all the people that are grandfathered in with sewage/grey water lines and leach fields dumping directly into our marshes. Bolbie, you got some liberal lobbyist friends with nothing to do or would that affect some of them personally?
marine pollution caused by plastic is a global environmental problem, sad to hear that its in our local waters.check out microplastics in the marine environment.
DEHEC is the agency responsible for checking, and approving of septic systems. As you know, horse faced Haley chose that crowd, good luck with them.

Not sure about your jab on Haley, but new septic systems are pretty strongly regulated. I’m talking about all the old houses on our coastline that were around before the regulations that have straight grey water directly emptying into the marsh and septic leach fields that are flooded during high tides. That’s the “crap” our oysters have to deal with.
you still contact DEHEC for that, just as you would call DNR for poaching.good luck.
Mr Goldfinch…I read heard the recent news of your truth in seafood accomplishment. The restaurants and businesses that pay more for the quality product deserve to be set apart from the business that choose to feed their customers garbage for a higher profit margin. Many charleston places are gonna be ducking for cover when this becomes law. My only question…how will it be enforced? Will there be data sampling like I read about or will this be honor code? You are doing great things for the fishing industry lately sir and I am so happy to see it happening and see a politician actually doing some good for the world! I know it has been cutting into your diving and exploring time and Im sorry for that but thanks much for using your position to better those around you. Lets go diving soon
I totally support this and it would be great if there was a way for patrons to report violators. Having recently eaten a “local grouper” sandwich that was clearly made with a small tilapia fillet, I would love to be able to have an outlet for my discontent. Venting at the poor wait staff wouldn’t do any good since they are ignorant 99% of the time.

If you are not paying over $20 for grouper anything…it is not grouper! Boat prices are VERY high on grouper right now. Our season opened May 1, but the weather is terrible. Basa, Swai, Panga, Corvina (a giant South American craoker), Nile perch, all are bought on the cheap…and sold as grouper.

Unfortunately I had one of those last week.
Not only do our local commercial fishermen need help to level the
playing field but as consumers you should have a right to know
what you are eating. According to reports that I have seen very
little of the imported seafood is tested and what is tested fails
because of bacteria, etc. I having been saying this for years, I
think every restaurant should list where there seafood is caught.
Swai - basa and panga is an asian catfish that is cultivated in mud holes and fed the cheapest food they can find. The usual pricing to a busineses back door is around $2 boneless skinless. I dont have a problem with a restaurant serving swai, but its just wrong to call it anything other than what it really is. I would like to see enforcement carried out by DEHEC. They are already in all foodservice and food handling facilities. It would be easy for an inspector to review the menu and then see what fish is really in the back, and if its frozen or fresh.
For those that aren’t familiar with DHEC…the biggest problem in Charleston and most places is that there are too many restaurants and a very understaffed DHEC office- we need to trade in half the cops driving around jerking off and replace them with DHEC agents to insure quality food- Each DHEC agent in charleston is responsible for over 1,000 food service establishments and kitchens- without quality food and more of a handle on the cancer rates will steadily increase and it will be bad

I must agree that we could use more enforcement on what we purchase. I disagree that 1/2 our cops are jerking off… Our law enforcement officers are top notch… under payed but prime.
Why do you say that 1/2 are jerking off:question: Do you have some facts or just running off at the mouth. If you have some proof that 1/2 our men and women cops are jerking off you need to come forward with some proof. I really don’t think that you’ll have that proof, but just maybe you’ll prove me wrong. waiting.
Fred, he’s still pissed about the ticket that cop gave him for speeding after he called him a jerkoff… and to think the cop was just going to give him a warning until then… lol

Fred and Meks, you guys can have your opinions and be funny and i will have mine… that part of what makes this america- Fred it sounds like you are or were a cop- good for you if you were- not sure where you guys live but i live on James Island and travel btn james island dntn charleston and mount pleasant much too often- “to protect and serve” is the biggest crock of #$#% ever- why is law enforcement the biggest business in SC?? Did you know that? Fines, tickets and arrests for EVERY SINGLE THING POSSIBLE- they are supposed to be doing good and all they are is tax officers- there are more cops per capita in this small area than anywhere you are ever gonna travel…Have you traveled anywhere ever?? My favorite part of leaving this country for months at a time on surf/fishing trips is the freedom of being free all the time with whatever im doing(im not killing people and robbing banks)- america is the biggest illusion of freedom ever- have you ever thought about the fact that you never own anything of value that is registered?? this is not time or place to launch a huge anti cop discussion - maybe where you live they are saving people and catching burglars and doing amazing stuff ( i doubt it) but over here they are doing ZERO good to the public except trying to maintain the state of fear the government wants us to live in- again, everyone has the own opinion and i have mine- sorry
