We had a great run the last two seasons fishing the Painkiller on Tuesday afternoons. This year I made the decision to go back to wednesdays. Psychologically it breaks up the week, and its easier to stay out later when its not so close to Sunday.
Mother nature had other ideas. We haven’t had a fishable Wednesday this season, despite several Tuesdays seemingly fishable. The forecast for tomorrow is terrible, so I rearranged my schedule and wrangled up a crew at 10am this morning for an afternoon bottom fishing adventure.
Fueling up the boat was a fiasco - no pumps working at the Marlin Quay or Crazy Sisters. Capt Jay was able to borrow a trailer and ran to the gas station.
So 1 pm we started our sojourn. We planned for the Parking Lot - the forecast didn’t match the seas. It was rough going. We turned towards the Goldfinch in search of smoother water and black sea bass. We had moderate success with both. The ride was tolerable, the engines ran true. We stayed dry at 40 mph.
Black sea bass galore. They came up two at a time. Keepers were not as plentiful. We anchored and moved a few times along the reef. The seas were turning uglier as the time passed. The edisto buoy recorded 2.3 every 3 sec with 20 + knot gusts. They seemed larger. The bite turned off and we headed home. Slower ride in, 25 mph, arriving at the dock at 4:30pm.
Despite not limiting out, it was GREAT to be back on the PainKiller! Ceviche and ‘gullah seasoned’ black sea bass for supper!
Tight lines,
Jason
