Back on the PainKiller for another tuesday afternoon adventure. Capt Jay, Jimmys brother Eddie, Dale, and the Colonel joined me.
We left the dock around noon, and decided to start by filling the box with delicious black sea bass as the early afternoon troll seemed slow from the recent reports on CF - better to have something in the box and provide some action for the guest fishers…
The parking lot didnt disappoint. We had a three man limit of BSB in no time. There was a tide line/weed line in 90 feet that I was dying to troll - just ten minutes - thats all they let me. At the nine minute mark, two rods start screaming! After a few minutes of dreaming huge, we landed two AJs. So much for my ideas!
Off to the scarp in time for the afternoon bite. Within minutes, the lines start getting hit - we lost the first one after it almost spooled us - it spit the hook - peeled off line like a hop? Then the planer rod gets hit - right at the swivel - lost the fish and the rig. Then the top line, lose it to a tangle. As we are working out the twisted line, the other twisted line gets hit - we went ZERO for five - just like that.
Humbled, we did not give up. It was game on. We took a few minutes to regroup, rehydrate and returned to trolling.
The colonel hooks up with the next screamer - it was a nice Hoo. Then Dale boats a stud Mahi. Then another HOO comes over the rail.
I was up next - waiting for my HOO - way back gets hit - peels off line like a hop - head shakes like a hoo - stays down like a hoo - until it gets close and reveals its shape - a black fin. Completes the MEATFISH SLAM in July!
Great ride home, the seas flattened out for the last half of the ride -
Tight lines,
Jason
