Tuesday Night Schooling

Large numbers of striper schooling around FA-44 this evening. Trolled around them with redfins while casting a bucktail but couldn’t pull any out. The diving gulls brought several boats over but I didn’t see them catch anything either. Tried until dark with no luck…I hate stripers.

larry try a gotcha plug.they are mostly for saltwater but the stripers will hit them.sportsman warehouse has a good selection of them.i saw a descent amount of birds diving at big man’s on the way home this afternoon.i’ll be at the catfish spot thursday at daybreak.i hope to see you on the water then.

Keep changing lure sizes until you find what they’ll hit. It doesn’t matter what it looks like. Right now they only want the size they’re feeding on.

which is likely small, like 3-4 inch. at least that’s what i’ve heard others saying on other boards.

I would say smaller. You are trying to match the size of the bait they are eating on top. Every time I have seen them schooling they were eating threadfin shad that were tiny.

prolly right steely.

That was a mistake I made last year. i used large lures because i could cast them better. And I used herring because that was all i knew. I would cast a freeline herring right in the middle of a giant school with striper splashing all over, reel it slow so it would just swim under the surface, and nothing would touch it. I threw my 1/2 inch mesh net into the threadfins and could not get any. The lure I did best on was a rattln trap. Although i never have pulled a legal fish from a school.

I am fishing close to the dam between Bomb and Spence Islands in deep water. I am throwing mostly a 5" swim bait to schooling fish and doing pretty well. Most of the fish are between 20 and 22 inches, so some are just barely legal and some don’t quite make it. However, no problem with lure size. Are these fish perhaps feeding on larger bait (herring) than the others? I am not familiar enough with the landmarks to know where on the lake the rest of you are finding fish. Are you fishing farther up the west side of the lake? Perhaps bait size varies depending on location? I would like to hear your thoughts on that.

I have not gone out for over a month. My boat is down. Had to pull the motor so I decided to do some transom work. But last year was what I was talking about. I was around spence and bomb. Last year they were feeding on small threadfin down there. I hope to know whats going on soon. I think I got ripped off on an ebay part. Been over a month, but thats a different story.
