Took my daughter out for her last Lake Murray trip. My son went to bingo night at the school. Launched out of koon and went over to beaverdam where we caught them schooling the week before. Searched all over beaverdam and halmark and couldn’t fine anything. Water was up around 83*. She was getting bored so I was going to go over to Johns and drop lines no matter what. All she really wanted to do was play with the herring so catching was optional. On the way over ran into a school that popped up in front of us. They were popping up for 30 seconds at a time every 10 minutes or so. Dropped our lines in and used the trolling motor to chase them around. Ended up with 1 keeper and 4 shorts. Only one on top water. Another odd thing was they were schooling after dark. Usually they stop as soon as the sun goes down. Big storm was brewing and we left about 8:45, right when bait and fish started to show up in the lights. Bait stayed alive much better than it did Sunday. My daughter spent the whole time chopping up herring with pliers. She pulled all of their eyes out and put them in a water bottle to make eyeball soup. She opened their mouths and pushed them onto her fingers and called them fish gloves. I’m not sure if I should be proud that she’s not squeamish or worried she takes such joy in ripping them up.
