Tuesday

Thinking about giving it a shot on Tuesday. Taking a couple of my neighbors kids and want them to reel some in. Any suggestions? Has the down rod bite heated up?

Yep. The downrod bite is now on-- 40-60 feet off the bottom. Points, humps, and road beds are producing well from the Elbow to the dam. Get the egg stinkers on those lines!

Finally a fishing report to read. Thanks Fog.

Got to go Wednesday. Boards were still producing early from daylight until about 9:00. Pulling with 1 oz. weights on lines across points and humps. Stayed in 30’ of water or so. Bite had slowed considerably around 9:00 (I had just kept pulling across and around the same point), but I had to leave anyway. If I could have stayed, I would have moved to another area and tried pulling some more or moved out deeper like James said and put out downrods.

Are you guys dropping live bait on your down rods? Are you tying a “Carolina rig” and then dropping it to the depth you’re seeing the fish?

Got my firs boat not to long ago and I’ve always to get after the striper. I’ve typically stumbled across them while bass fishing and caught’em with my bass gear but I’m wanting to actually start targeting them.

YES. I typically use a fluorocarbon leader anywhere from 18" to 36" long, 2 oz egg sinker, and a 1/0 circle hook. I’m still learning this game, but this is what I do. Honestly ,Gary, Colby, and I caught 50+ keepers in the MSC DNR tournament a week ago Saturday. We caught a dozen or so keepers pulling early, but the dowrod bite was insane when we switched over. Unfortunately for us, our biggest was 10.26 with our second 8.34. That was only good enough for 4th MSC and 7th in the open. Still, it was a great day fishing with Colby astonished that we were constantly throwing back 6-7 pounders.

James, all on live bait? …did you pull out the spoons at all?

I thought about the spoons after the fact, but wouldn’t have had time to tie one on. Once we set up with live bait, we never went more than a couple minutes without multiple hookups. It was crazy good! It was a real phenomenon. While dealing with another fish, I left a rod in a holder with a bait dangling on the surface. We unhooked the fish we were dealing with, heard a toilet flush, and the rod with the surface dangling bait started screaming with a 7+ pounder. Just like the Old Milwaukee commercials, it doesn’t get much better than that! I know we can catch em, but it would be tough to reproduce that kind of bite.

Sounds like fun! I wish I could been there.
