this doe showed up behind the house this past week. got a nasty lookin growth on the side of her face. she looks fairly fat/healthy besides her face.
that family of coons has your corn pile dialed in.some duke dog proof traps would cure that quickly.
That doe has a benign soft tissue tumor called a fibroma and the condition is called fibromatosis. It’s caused by papilloma virus and the skin condition is specific to deer and won’t infect humans. The meat from a deer with fibromatosis is safe to eat because it only effects the skin and not flesh. I understand it’s not fatal to deer. I got that info directly from DNR years ago when I hunted some land where infected deer were fairly common although I’ve never seen a tumor that large. It was usually multiple small tumors that appeared like large warts. My hunter friends and I had a lot of fun telling hunt club guests who killed and handled a deer with fibroma that it was highly contagious to humans and they needed to get to a hospital immediately for treatment. We only let them think about it for a few minutes before we cracked up laughing and exposed the spoof.
