Decided the time had come to cash in on the Wahoo bite and headed out to Georgetown with high hopes. Enjoyed a beautiful ride out with flat seas and full moon only to find it cloudy and raining at the hole. Set lines around 7:30, 4 with wire down deep, the other 5 long. First hit 10 minutes later which got off then constant action until around noon. Ended up putting a dozen tuna and 2 skippies in the boat. No four baggers but 2 triples, a double and the rest singles. Got to where you could pretty much call the play from the fish finder! We even tried to jig some up but with no success. Hit a couple bottom numbers on the way back. When we got back to the dock my son met us to confirm with his own eyes that he had made the wrong decision to stay home and study for his upcoming law school exams. He did get the last laugh however when he pointed out to us that one of our blackfins was in fact a YELLOWFIN that had somehow slipped on board without us noticing! Fortunately it was legal so we were not forced to release it at the dock. Despite the lack of Wahoo, needless to say we had an awesome day.
Side by side taste test briefly marinated in teriyaki and flash sauteed in sesame oil to me the yellowfin is a little sweeter and more tender. Without the side by side I doubt I could tell the difference, but I’m willing to catch more yellowfin to find out! I’m going to duck now while the aficionados go off on how blackfin is only good for bait!!!
