Went fishing with friends out of OI Monday. 560lbs of fish were gaffed, 9 YFT and some mahi. All tuna caught under kites-- the boats dragging baits mostly came back empty handed! Awesome action. Wish we didn’t have to drive 9 hours to get there… got home and gave away 50 pounds to happy friends! Tight lines!
great picture of the yellow-fin coming over the side;I’m like dinnertime how about some info on the kites, what are they using under them,I’ve heard stories about the yum flying fish being used??
Exactly-- we trailed kites at 400yds. Suspended YUM flyers under them aiming at mid wave period for depth (so they did “fly” for about 20-30% of the time). Trolled at 5kts. Only ran 2 lines, so covered what, 12 linear feet of the ocean and still caught plenty of fish. Tried putting 3 up once but not enough wind. Only one other boat had (or used) a kite that day.
Rigged with 3 circle hooks on fluoro leader. Lighter weight rods and line made the fights tough and long.
Two of the tunnies hit the bait in mid air-- it was awesome. Almost all of them were visible in the hunt for a wave or two before taking the bait.
A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work!
Man it is telling when they have to resort to kites up there. That’s what a lot of guys were doing here right before they disappeared. The last time we had big schools here they were busting and wouldn’t eat ■■■■■. Yet they are completely different in the gulf. It has to be that these fish are being raped off the coast of Africa. Sorry to jack the thread, but anyone here will agree that it is nutts they are having to use kites up there.
The last time I was up there in the end of Feb. the fishing had been really hot… Like boats back at the dock at one or two o clock w limits hot but the day we fished was really slow. The only tuna we caught the whole day hit the short flat line but it came out the water about three feet away from the bait and actually ate it on the way back into the water. Pretty cool to see how accurate they are that way.
