I’ve been lurking on this site for a while because I’m moving to Lady’s Island soon.
Here are a couple of photos from a recent trip I made to Hurricane Bank…1000 miles south of San Diego and 500 miles offshore.

bluefin here. I’m not sure if many people target them from that area

It’s not fair that we don’t have Tunas like that here!! Hopefully the Tuna will make there run to this side of the stream from the Charleston Bump, and speaking of the Bump, Has anyone ever fished there? everything I’ve read promotes it to be a great place, Sure would like to fish there this season, Great pic’s of a great catch.

Is that a circular scar on the belly of this tuna??? If so, maybe a cookie cutter shark got him? Pretty cool.

On the trip I posted the pics from there were wahoo jumping everywhere but I couldn’t get one to bite. The
skipper didn’t want to focus on them by trolling around the 30 fathom line etc. I caught many of them in years past and have a lot of wahoo tackle. Its really my favorite fish to catch and eat. One of the reasons I chose the SC coast to retire.

where can i get a gaff like that…

the gaffs are made by each boat crew I believe.
the gaff hook is lashed on to a 10-12 foot piece of bamboo and then varnished or resined.
they look pretty easy to make.
they’re sort of expendable because a lot of them get broken with these big fish
when it breaks the hook is re-used on another peice of bamboo
2 or 3 gaffs are needed for 1 fish
you can see the second gaff in the head of the fish
