Why is it the can get that close to em and we can’t?? They catch em like that in La. also.

Up there its the labrador (sp) current. I have seen color changes where there is a 10 degree temp break. Blue to green. Its unreal. Best part is from Hatteras its only about 20 to 25 miles.

We had a great day kite fishing last spring. That is a blast.

If you ever fish out of Hatteras you will want to go back before you ever leave. Some of the nicest people you will ever meet. That has been my experince over the past 15 years there.

There are some great people in Hatteras!!! Jigging is the way to go, esp when you mark the tunas on bait but they won’t come up to eat a trolled or chunked bait. A buddy of mine has been wearing the blackfins out in hatteras jigging…You’ll also get AJ’s, yellowfins, kings, and wahoo. Expect to lose some jigs to the kings and hoos, so don’t go buying the expensive shimano jigs. Williamson has very productive jigs at half the price…

Their was a good article in BIG GAME this issue about the lack of tuna this past season in the NE canyons and they pointed to the golf stream eddies for there slow season.I don’t think that was our problem because we don’t see the major eddies here below Hatteras. maybe we need to fish deeper or the other side of the stream. That would mean multi boat overnight trips and fishing two full days and deep dropping or sharkin over night.
Just a thought.

If you’ve never experienced, a temperature Break or a real rip, That’s the place to go, I’ve seen 8 to 10 degree breaks with rips that are not even imaginable here off our coast, and Color change like Black to white. you have to literally see it to understand. If you love offshore fishing you really should go. Pull your boat up through Morehead city catch the ferry out of Cedar Island over to Ocracoke then on over to Hatteras or from Charleston, I 95 then into Manteo, I always liked fishing out of Oregon Inlet. Not a bad trip just have to watch the weather.

OI can get a bit hairy. I’ve seen 12 ftrs going across the bar then flat calm with a ground swell once you get to the other side. If you do go out and are not familar with the inlet, please, PLEASE follow out a charter boat…Too many boats lost every year out of OI…It is very unforgiving!!! Hatteras Inlet has it’s days too!!!

I’m from Hatteras Village and we used to sit on Odens dock and watch the big sportfisher’s from far away places go out thru the inlet and wonder if we’d ever see them again. I’ve seen breakers in that inlet that would roll a 50 footer (and has). Nice of you Stressrelief to comment on how nice the locals are, lot’s of folks with big city attitudes that visit the island would disagree with you I’m afraid. The locals are hard working folks who appreciate someone who comes to visit and respects the culture and the history of the island and it’s people.

I think that actually was our problem. While the water warmed up quickly last spring, the Gulf Stream itself stayed well offshore in April and May and never backflowed inshore like it usually does in the springtime. The best tuna fishing off Charleston in the past 10 years has taken place when that backflow is right on the Georgetown Hole. That didn’t happen at all last spring. I’ve heard from reliable sources that commercial boats caught yellowfin on the far side of the Stream off our coast - there were no Stream-related features holding bait or drawing them to our side.

-----------------------------Im going back to Hatteras the third week in April hope the weather cooperates with us to get out fishing. If anyone likes to fish on a Headboat you need to try Miss Hatteras taht Capt. is a nut.He remember everybody name and picks on you all day.I always have a blast on her. I must also say the Mates are great,KP and Natalie. She is as tough as cut nails. If big city people dont like it there then they should stay home.I have never met any local there that was a butt----.They are all layed back and just go with the flow, never in a hurry to get rid of you. Will answer questions all day if you can keep coming up with them. Counting down the days till Im going back.

Stressrelief- The Capt. of the Miss Hatteras(Spurgon Stowe)is the son of one of the greatest offshore captains that ever chartered out of Hatteras Inlet. (Capt.“Clam” Stowe) Capt Clam’s boat the “Jackie Fay” an old round stern wooden boat was retired, refurbished and put on display in the village as a prime example of what the old original locally built charter boats were like. She sat up on a permanant mount for a few years until Hurricane Isabel took her out in 03’. She was built in the Village and rolled to her launching place on wooden logs, one placed in front of the other and then moved back to the bow to advance her towards the creek. (Innovation at it’s best) Capt. Clam was a WWII diabled vet that survived the Battan death march but it never slowed him down for a minute. He too was a gregarious soul that everyone loved dearly. Unfortunatly most of the old true “Hatterasmen” are gone now but Spurgon, Lil Edgar Styron, Capt. Ernie Foster and a few others carry forward the “waterman” lineage that has kept the Village so unique right on into the 21st century.
If you want to see some great “Hatteras” memorabilia stop by the store some time, I’ve got some great old nautical antiques that have been in my family for 150 years, handmade fishing lures and even an old US Life Saving Service (pre USCG) cork life jacket on display there.

I fished Hatteras last year on the ALBITROSS on a real bad day, capt Andy wanted to call it and the guys insisted we go. the bar was bad and offshore didn’t get any better. We stuck it out all day for a few small dolphins and a sailfish release. I’d love to fish OI this year.
Jeff

Once you start going there it hadr to quit.
