wasnt sure if i was going today off so i had thanksgiving on sunday with a couple friends on base and my wifes asleep because she works black friday overnight tonight…ended up having the day off so looked like a free pass for me to go fishing. checked the tide and tides4fishing.com said today was forecasted to be a bad day for fishing. anyone who knows me knows how much that will stop me and by the time i got to the river on base it was 2 1/2 hours til high tide. ive been curious about the straight plastic baitfish colored jigs that have been in my tackle box since the late 80s when i started to learn to fish and know how effective TTs are despite being simple so i decided to try them out and work them just like a TT. didnt take long sure enough i got a nice hit and up comes a 15"ish trout only to spit it right when i was trying to sling it over the pier. couple casts later i hook another about the same size and again lose it at the side of the pier. much like any other experienced fisherman i blame it on dull hooks and look for my sharpener but left it at home. couple casts later i get another hit that felt like another nice trout and a couple seconds into the fight i decide to set the hook again so i dont lose it. fish doesnt budge, rod doubles over twice as hard, and all i hear is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. all i was using was the 5’10" medium action ugly stick with 8lb line i bought when i 1st got to charleston and still use with light lures for trout and flounder so i was counting down how long it would be until it found the rocks, pier posts, and or oysters and i lose the fish. it comes up and i see not only is it a red as i but a pretty nice red so i was preparing myself best i could for the epic fail that was bound to happen even though my drag was set right and im no rookie at big fish on light tackle. kept fighting hard but somehow i kept it away from nasty cover, played it out, and in a very interesting manner was able to actually land the fish unharmed. took a quick picture and mea
