I took a charter out for kayakfishsc yesterday and decided to check the ICW flats for fish. We got out there around 8am and checked a minnow trap that I had set the night before. It ended up having 9 eels in it up to 2 feet long! I have never had more than two in trap before. It was quite a site. Dnr made a quick stop to wish us luck and after a little kayaking 101 instruction we hit the flats.
As soon as we broke through the tall grass, much to my, there was a redfish tailing right in front of us. I quickly rigged up a gulp crab and started instructing Tracy where to cast. Despite his best efforts the red did not want to play nice. We ended up seeing several other tails with similar results. As the water started to head back out we switched to cut bait. Tracy ended up picking up two small slot reds and I ended up with one nice red and a couple of small ones myself before we head back out to the sound.
Once out there we set up with mud minnows and cut bait on the grass edge. I ended up with several more nice fish up to 27.5" but Tracy had a bit of bad luck that prevented him from bringing in anymore, including one that spit a circle hook right at the side of the yak. All in all I do not think we could have asked for a better day. 81 degrees followed up by Turkey day dinner.
On a side note, I recently picked up a new stake out pole from Palmetto Kayak fishing. I have used it several times now and must say I really like it. The point is much longer than others I have used in the past and instead of being a round cone for a point it has four ridges that come to a point. At first glance i did not think much of this feature but after getting out and using it the point makes a big difference. It allowed me to push the stake out pole into much firmer ground including through oyster shells. I also liked the t handle. I felt like i as able to get a firmer grip on the pole for placement and removal. All in all I am very happy with this purchase and for more than half the price of ones i payed for in the past it ca
