i have been turkey hunting for three years and every year we go out and get on turkeys and we get them within about 50 or 60 yqrds and then a hen starts clucking down in the opposit direction and he turns around and goes to the hen we cant get him to commit to our setup. is there any thing i can do to get him to commit to me i have a slate a box and some reeds i kinda know how to use them but i guess not good enough any help would be nice thanks in advance
Sit tight, she will leave him and he will come looking for you(the other hen). Don’t call alot, and do some scatching in the leaves with your hands. Keep your eyes open, because he may slip in behind you.
sit tight for sure…try setting up with the caller 10-25 yards behind the shooter. Try and mimic the hens with ur calling, my best trick for a henned up gobbler is to get in a calling fight with the hen and piss her off enough that she comes looking for me…and guess who follows every time. But be careful not to overcall. You could be calling too much at first and when he gets closer you shut up and then he loses interest in u or realizes something just aint exactly right.
thanks i was talkin to a guy the other fay and he said that if he turkey move to a nother hen to move around it qnd start calling but idk if thats a good idea ?
50 yrds from my gun is dead bird.
Invest in a good 3 1/2 mag and a real good choke. I also use heavy shotshells

move, get inbetween him and the hen… he’s not leaving that hen until he’s done his deed
or as another poster said, try to call like a dominate hen n piss her off so she comes to you with him in tow

is it possible that i might be over calling because we call after he gobbles every time
I personally dont like to call after every gobble you have to keep him thinking she wants him but she isnt sure and he needs to show himself to make her want him!! I do like to keep a steady purr and some clucking going on to sound like a happy group of hens…Just my 2 cents worth!!
slight bit of misleading info on here…
The point of turkey hunting is to convince the bird to die. one doesn’t need to invest in something that will let him reach out 50+yards. the same folks that practice this are the same that shoot ducks at treetop level thinking that 3.5’s are the only way to bring down a duck that isn’t commited to your setup.
The fun in this should very much be the experience. the hairs really stand up on your neck when a bird is inside of 30 yards and slowly working his way in.
Smitty you have plenty of firepower. Sit tight, slow down on the calling. the bird knows what pine needle you are on when you hit that call. believe that. it will happen soon enough. You can’t rush turkeys.
Good luck.
