Two licenses on a pole (sharing)?

I’ve asked DNR multiple times about this.

My dad and I have one set of poles. Per DNR’s directions, only one license can be attached to a set of poles.

I don’t think it makes sense, but I also don’t want a ticket. We really aren’t out trying to break laws and would only keep one limit a day if we shrimped together.

We just want to be able to shrimp when the other can’t go, and not have to move tags or have a separate set of poles.

I think you can probably do it, but do not try to keep more than one limit per day, period.

So- since your not LEO how do you know the outcome & details??

The guys were members of the same hunt club I was in. They tried to make us understand that THEY were in fact right about the rules, even after being fined more than once for the same offense, and losing their case in court.

Made for some good laughs around the camp fire, at their expense

is YOUR name not on the tag? if not then the person who’s name is on them better be in the boat. no different than holding someone else’s hunting license or turkey tags.
this should not be that complicated unless trying to cheat the system and convince yourself that you are doing no wrong.

Why not use a cap that would screw onto the poles. Just have a separate set of caps for each licensee. If you don’t use them on the same day it would be a separate catch per license per day.

Back when I used to shrimp, we would glue a coupling on the top of our pvc poles. We would cut a piece of 12" PVC to place the tag onto and then slip the tag in the pole and set it out. Reflective tape was on the pole, not the 12" tag piece. When we were done, the tag pieces would fit inside a 4" PVC drain pipe that had a glued cap on one end and the other end cap was left to slip on and off. 10 3/4" pvc pieces fits perfectly into a 4" thin walled drain pipe.By both of us having tags, we could use either set. The drain pipe sure helped protect the tag from wear.

Thanks SCDIVER, that sounds definitive. After reading these posts, I can see how it could be abused by taking multiple limits. There are some good ideas about how to change out licenses on poles here, thanks all.

Stu-

I got it down. 10 poles maximum.

Is it possible to have two legitimate tags on those 10 poles. Jimbo bought the poles and has a license and I have a license. He is not going out this weekend and I want to borrow his poles at attach my license to it also.

I would have 10 poles. 20 stickers (2 license), and be present with my physical card/license.

Thanks

I haven’t seen anything in the regulations about having 2 tags on a set of poles. As long as you follow all of the laws, why should anyone care? That just sounds like a technicality. If you only have 1 48qt cooler on your boat and do everything else by the letter of the law, I could do that in good conscience… Please understand that I am not a lawyer, and I do not work for DNR. But what I am saying is, I personally would do it (unless someone can prove to me on paper that I shouldn’t). That being said, I would only do it if my intentions were legitimately to use the same poles between 2 boats on different days. I would NOT do it if it was an attempt to “bend” the rules to do something unsportsmanlike\unethical. Again, that’s just me personally… Also, I’ve been stopped by DNR MANY times. I’ve always found them to be professional and reasonable. Heck, even when I was in the wrong (I’ve been caught with expired fishing license once or twice in July, and expired registration), they did everything they could to help me out. I think they are legitimately out there to catch game hogs and ethical violations and people trying to “outsmart” the law.

I called DNR (just now) and was told that the law said one tag per pole. I said I wanted to put two tags per pole to share with my equally licensed friend. He said the law said one tag per pole. I asked why. He gave me some circular logic that made no sense about someone using my poles without a license (??) or maybe that DNR wouldn’t know who was using the poles at the time (??). I said one or both of us would be present using the poles and both of us have the license so none of that made any sense.

Anyways, I asked for my own curiosity, where in the law it said this so I could read it myself. He said he was going to transfer the call to his desk and I was promptly hung up on.
