Two main ?'s

  1. I have purchased a new boat with a Furuno sounder and it seems to be working fine except for the fact that it does not display the depth in the lower left as it ought to. I have been boating for a number of years and downloaded the sounder’s manual from the website and am still having no luck. Any help? Or, does anyone know someone who works on stuff like this without me having to put my boat in the shop for weeks? It may just be the transducer, but it seems to be returning accurate speed and temp, so?

  2. I am wondering if there is a sea surface temperature site that operates for free that is worth a (**()? If not, which is the best with which I can see the sst with the ability to zoom in and not just guess within a ten mile span?

Which model Furuno? Is the boat in the water when you are not seeing a depth? Even if the ducer isnt working it will at least display something.

The Rutgers site for SST is ok, for free.

I have just gone through the process of testing my transducer’s temp sensor. Basically you need a multimeter and a schematic which will show you which wires carry the depth data from your transducer. You will use the Ohm’s setting on the MM and a chart from Furuno which tells you at what ohms the sensor should be reading based on the outside temperature. I was able to verify a “dead” temp sensor and using the same method rule out a problem with the head unit.
