two small issues to work out on motors

I have the motors almost dialed in for the summer. They crank and idle great and run out good and strong. I have two little bugs to work out and then they will be perfect. They are Suzuki 1996 carbed DT140s

  1. Starboard motor cranks great and idles great in the water at about 850rpms, when i drop it in gear it falls to around 450rpms. This is too low and if I turn the thumb screw adjustment and get it up to about 650rpms or so, then when i put it back in neutral it is over 1000rpms. What is causing it to fall too much?
  2. The port engine cranks, idles and runs like a champ, but when running fast and then pulling back the throttles quickly to slow down…it knocks off. Cranks right back up instantly and doesn’t do it if you pull the throttle back slowly. Only bringing it back from 4 or 5,000 rpms to idle instantly. Where would you start looking?

You might wish to run this by Chris V, but I believe you may need the shifter/neutral ‘area’ lubricated.
I’m sorry I do not remember the proper name of the assembly, but my Johnson used to have those issue(s) when it needed lubrication, then it would shift fine, maintain proper RPM’s, and not cut off. May be affecting the low RPM’s on the other motor too.

sounds like carb issues to me on the high low idle issue

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

Thanks Chris,
I think so also. I am going to order the kits and do both motors. To make it easier for me, could I just take one at a time off, take apart, soak, assemble and put back on? I was thinking I wouldn’t have to mess with syncing them that way, just pop the individual linkage off and on. The butterflys seem to be perfect at WOT and closing at idle and the synching is the only thing I am worried about screwing up.
Also the Suzuki manual says the adj screw after rebuild should be backed out .62 - 1.1 turns from lightly seated. I was going to do 3/4 of a turn. Does that sound OK? These are inline 4 cylinders
Thanks for your help
