I spent the week like most of you, dreaming about slick calm conditions and how fast I could run out to the fish. By Friday morning I was wondering whether or not we would get blown out. But, since Saturday was the only day, and the plans had been made, we stayed committed.
Cleared the inlet to find a very confused ocean with some stacked up waves. Settled in for 60 miles at 30 mph. Arrived at the Deli and deployed the spread in 150 ft. Planer rod is first with a slinger dolphin. Well maybe the ride will be worth it? Next up is a nice bull that my son fights all the way to the boat.
The fish was still very alive for this pic, and my son did not want anything to do with it?..lol. 37 lbs on the scale.
Moved on a little bit deeper and picked up a blackfin on the center rigger and found a small weedline forming. Worked that with a few other boats there and picked up some peanuts, then a decent fish. I was honing my gaff skills, so I went for the tail on this one.
Worked that area for a little and headed NE into the slop to try and get a little better ride home. Made the call for 30 more minutes and the long line got slammed in 165 ft. Nice wahoo for the meat fish slam.
6 dolphin
1 wahoo
1 blackfin
Saw free jumping sails, some big turtles, and I got to fish with my dad and my son…
Way to go guys, Great report. This is the year my sons are going to be old enough to come out with me on their first offshore adventure. I can’t wait to share what you guys just shared.
