I’d tend to agree. The water temp where we fished on Saturday was 52 degrees. Sunday at the same spot the warmest we saw was 47 degrees. Only thing that made it worthwhile for me was a giant old largemouth that I caught with a spoon and released. Marked lots of bait and fish but most of the fish had lockjaw.
In hindsight we should have simply not gone … Too many things said ‘stay home’ …
Started by getting up late … really late … like 11:00 late …
Strike 1 - Starting too late
Stepped outside and saw my trees blowing … I know from experience if my trees are barely moving then it’s 10 mph +/- … my trees were swaying which usually means 15 - 20 depending on the sway …
Strike 2 - Too windy
I decided to go to the rivers based on the wind … Because I was late I did not pick up any Herring … I have plenty of Shad at the house … Never Never Never take only one form of bait in the winter months … 1st time I’ve broken that rule in a long long time …
Strike 3 - Limited bait options
On the way I heard an odd engine noise … Pulled into Capt’s Choice to check it out … Found out I was a qt low on oil … The Avalanche has been telling me for a week to change the oil … I wanted to go fishing instead …
Strike 4 - should have done household chores
Fellow MSC Club member, Marshall, saw me and stopped to make sure I was okay … He was hesitant to fish but was going to the same ramp as we were … We stopped to get/add some oil and passed him leaving the ramp - He said it was too rough and he was going home … He also said it was likely too rough for our boat as well … We said, thanks and continued on …
Strike 5 - failure to heed warnings
Got on the water and rounded the corner to our 1st spot which was sheltered from the wind and settled down to start fishing …
After about 5 minutes we started marking fish … a lot of fish … a lot of non-eating, non-moving, not even the slightest bit interested in our bait … fish …
We pulled shad at speeds from .5 to 1.2 …
We pulled shad at all depths from surface to 30’ …
We pulled shad in all sizes ranging from 4" to 10" …
We didn’t even get a nibble …
All day I counted half a dozen fish that rose up in the water column to look at our baits …
Nada … Nothing … boring … So we mo
I’ll bite; Knowing what you know now, Rick -including the skunking… would you do it all over again?
(This is where I wish we had one of those popcorn eating emoticons to choose from- LOL)
Meaning …
Would I do it over again exactly the same way? No …
Did I learn from my mistakes? Yes …
I learned that I have to get up earlier, make sure I have Herring AND Shad, do the household chores the day/night before, and never leave fish to find fish …
The rest … ehhhhhh … I’m stubborn, what can I say …

All valid points. It’s fun to learn from others mistakes instead of my own … for once.
Last offshore trip we left fish to find fish and it cost us dearly. We lost a couple hours out of an already time restricted short day.
