What kind of weed guard are you tying?

I tied a lot of flies to use on the flats with a wrapped weed guard coming from the bend at the shank to the hook eye

I’m assuming you mean the two post variety that sticks down from the back of the hook eye. I don’t think there’s any special trick to it other than to practice and make sure you give yourself enough room. I like to give myself plenty of room and then figure 8 wrap the posts and then super glue them. One way you can reduce a bulky or messy looking head is to use smaller size thread. This can be hard at first but I find the flies come out better looking

i put the material in early and just let it extend out past the eye until i finish dressing and then just bend it back and fix the angle while i build the thread head. they are a pain and i try to avoid them but some patterns just demand a guard. i am playing with an extended bead that may play into my weed guard, but i just started it yday and need to work out the thing before i recommend it.
he’s pretty white for a fly guy
I recommend tying the guard on first. I like the double strands coming down in front of the hook over the loop. I find the loop makes it more difficult to tie in the tail and body and I think it is stiffer thus maybe more weedless but harder to hook the fish unless it really chomps down. Just my opinion. Bend the piece of mono and leave the bend slightly above the hook shank until you get it tied in then you can pull it down some. Another hint is to put a dab of Clear Cure Goo around the base of the guard then get the two pieces aligned just right and zap it with the blue light. The most common novice fly tying mistake is crowding the hook eye with almost all types of flies, don’t worry we’ve all done it.

Leaving a little extra room on the head is the way to go. It takes a little bit of trial and error to find the right amount but then it’s easy, I tied in one strand of mono or two on crabs, then bend it back to shape and it works great in the grass around here…
