I have hear some opinions that it is better to snell a circle and a J hook. What do most of you think?
I typically prefer to snell my hooks, especially if they have an offset eye. The reason I prefer to do this is because I like to have the hook stay straight and stiff with the leader for a direct pull when setting the hook. A snell is also the strongest line to hook knot because the line does not have to make a tight bend around the hook eye under high tension and is also protected by the eye.
With that said, when in a hurry I will tie a improved clinch or a palomar.

Turned up eye I always snell.
I tie it so that with a loop in the leader so that the bait can swim and act as natural as it can with a hook thru its lip or back.
I do both.

I do both as well. Lures will get tied with a loop knot to allow for more action. Turned eyes = snell, straight eyes = palomar or uni or improved clinch. Some of those choices also fall to if it is a braid or mono. One other thing that decides the knot is line diameter.
Umm, you gonna eat that?©
Uni-knot snell- easy, quick, one less knot to learn.
