i currently have an el-cheapo vise that came in an orvis kit i got a few years ago but now i think its time to upgrade. Any reccomendations? i want a full rotary vise but lets keep the price reasonable lets say below $400.

You have a way different definition of reasonable than I do.
I built a full custom rotary in a machine shop in about 4 hours several years ago.
I’ve gone back to the el-cheapo for most flies
i have gotten some very usable ones off of ebay. i like the regal and copies. spring clamp so i can just put in the different size hooks without adjustment. i have a bunch of different kinds as i buy out people who are giving it up. i got one that was sprung but most have been very good with maybe a little rust or scratches. i keep two or three on the bench so i can work on one while the other dries or whatever. i need to be able to turn the fly over for clousers etc. but i dont need the full rotation at all angles for mass production. i get bored after a dozen or so max of the same thing. i am not experienced in your price range tho.
we dont need no reservations we dont need no cruise control
with the spring clamps have you ever had problems with the hook slipping?
my friend has a rezanetti and i like it alot but im not sure what model it was.

I picked up a Renzetti vice from the guys at Charleston Angler in WA about a year ago. I love it!! Works great for larger hook sizes for the saltwater flies I’m just learning about, and it works great for the smaller flies for freshwater that I’ve been tying for the past few years. I think it was around $250. A major step up from the “el-cheapo” my dad passed on to me when I was in college.
im not going to say that you cant make a really long hook slip on the clamp style with unithread or kevlar but it is generally not a problem with what i tie (4-4/0 mostly). i dont like it for the tube adaptor as it is wedge shaped and does tend to work out on long tubes. i am sure there are better vises than what i use but i dont know that i would tie any better or faster. if i was tying production i would go for something different, but just for what we sell in the shop i keep up fine.

I started with a Regal and later got a plastic and metal Danvise. I haven’t used the Regal since. If I had what I really want, I’d have a Dyna King Barracuda. Next choice would be Renzetti.
Whatever you get, get a true rotary that rotates on the axis of the hook shank. I also like a camlock type closure.
does anybody have any recs on books for fly tying? its something i have always wanted to get into and figured reading about it would at least get me started. any helpful advice on how to get started would be greatl appreciated
bsb- go to youtube and search for fly tying videos. I haven’t found a book that show you as well as a video, and they are free. There is a good one on how to spin deer hair to make a Dahlberg Diver. The technique is the same for making Borski crabs/sliders.
I bought a Renzetti Clouser. I like it, but wish I had gotten one with a true rotary vice. The hook can be manipulated on the clouser to rotate pretty close to having the hook be level, but it would be nicer for spinning hackle etc if it were a true rotary vice.
thanks mummichdog, i have been watching those and your ■■■■ right about the free part. but i still havent even got a tying kit yet and was wondering if you had any sugeestions on kits. also what do you think about getting them off of ebay? thanks again
might as well be dead up here if i cant find that live bottom
