Tying weedguards

I’m looking for some recipes for weedguards that work. My amateur tying capabilities have led me to some frustrating moments lately-I’m using looped mono (30# I think). I’m sure there are pros and cons to all types I just need something better than what I’m tying.
All help is appreciated!

you can use the 30 pound and make a v with it by crimping it in the middle. tye in behind you eyes and trim to the hook point. glue it in as you go. if you are in reel tough stuff, use 50lb.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>If the fly is big enough, try double loop of 30. Single loop always falls to one side or other. Double loop seems like it’s almost self aligning.

FYI, switch to flourocarbon and it will maintain its shape and rigidity much better and longer!

I have tried many things and now use two different types of weedguard. I will crimp the end of some 50lb mono with some needle nose pliers to make grooves and then tie it in place and trim so it clears the hook point. The other I use is some small diameter titanium wire. With the wire I have found that it is best to double it over where you are going to tie it in, so that it stays in place better. I have used the looped mono, I just do not care for it too much.

Here is a picture of a mono weedguard on a gold crab I tied.

Picture didn’t work for some reason, here is the link to it.

I use single strand wire and wrap it to the hook shank first, leaving about an inch sticking past the hook eye. After the fly is finished, I bend it over and trim it to the right length. Be careful though because it is easy to jab yourself with the wire when you are wrapping thread.

Thanks for all the insight. I think I really like the wire option. Can you get the wire at the fly shop? or is it found at lowes/ACE/Home Depot?
Thanks again!

Yup, 40 tied in like this and it slides through the grass like a charm.

This is a a flouro loop tied to both ends of the hook…nice and tight!

The wire I use is available at a tackle shop. It’s single strand leader wire. It comes in various sizes.
