I watched three boats full of nimrods bust the birds all over Beards Creek a few weeks ago. Everytime the birds congregated these guys would fire up and race right into them. The funny thing was every time they congregated they were diving on Loons.
Some folks just never seem to learn. Most, if not all, of the time they would have a better chance of actually catching more than one or two stripers at a time if they would just ease up to the birds with their trolling motors. I had the same trouble with a couple of older guys several weeks ago. They actually trolled three circles around my boat with their very loud motor while I was playing a nice striper. They only succeeded in spooking the other fish.
About 30 minutes later the fish returned fairly near me. I again eased into them with the trolling motor and caught 6 more stripers. Thankfully, the bird chasers didn’t see any of that action because they had already run around a point on the other side of the lake. Otherwise they would probably have spooked them again.
As far as the loons go, on many occasions, I’ve found stripers under gulls mixed with loons. Both species like to feed on the baitfish being pushed up by the stripers.
