Ulterra Ipilot w/ Hummingbird

Looking at upgrading trolling motor. Is anyone running it linked to the hummingbird? I’m wondering if it is worth getting a new hummingbird fishfinder?
Also, current lowrance unit is in the console, does anyone run their unit upfront w/ the trolling motor. I havent really used my lowrance for fishfinding as such, just really use it for depth and charts.

thanks

I had the Link on my old skiff and loved it. Have to have the Lakemaster chip. Had the small auxiliary remote for times I didn’t need the bulkier Link remote. The ability to follow contours, tracks etc while fishing was solid. Lowrance vs Humminbird is like deciding between Ford or Chevy. Lot of folks have fancy graphs and have no clue how to use them.

Thanks Loon, this is my first boat, came with a lowrance and i struggle to figure out all the features. i think for the kind of fishing im doing, inshore shallow stuff, using an actual fishfinder is of limited value. but the idea of being able to follow contours and set trails up from the hummingbird seems pretty cool. thanks a lot

are you primarily fishing fresh water? if so, the link is pretty incredible.
if you are fishing saltwater, its not nearly as impressive.

salt inshore, ICW, wando etc.

thanks

I probably wouldn’t spend the money for the link.
the coastal charts are not as good as the lake charts, from what I have seen over the past couple years

If you are also choosing a fish finder I recommend Lowrance or Simrad. In my experience Hummingbird products may not last in salt. I was strictly a Hummingbird guy for years but I fished fresh water. My 788 didn’t last two years once I started fishing salt. Having some eperience with electronics I fixed the 788 the first time by replacing a 0 ohm resistor. Two trips up Wando in 6 foot waves it stopped working again… same resistor and more were corroded. I still have the board for SMC parts. The zoomed in pic shows the resistor with bottom end corroded. I cleaned the board when th acetone too.

I had a 700 series that originally came with my boat and agree it was entry level and junk. My 899 that I had linked was bombproof and saw a lot of saltwater. Seriously doubt he would try to link a 700 series.

Its been awhile but I recall the 788 was pretty expensive…I think it was purchased in '08.

dterry, as long as you get the spotlock/anchor feature you’ll be golden!

JumpNCobia, how do you like replacing those surface mount resistors?? LOL

Thanks Stump, just need to sell my wife on a new ‘wreath holder’. Thats what she calls the trolling motor since we had some Christmas pics taken on the boat with the dogs and used the trolling motor for the Christmas wreath!
