Unattended boats at Wappoo landing

I don’t know about the skiff with the raincover on it, but I know the grady has been sitting there since yesterday at least. There is not a soul in sight around these boats today. Don’t know the reason, but it doesn’t really seem right to me. Anyone have an explanation? These boats would be an extreme inconvenience if it were a good weather Saturday taking up valuable dock and near dock space.

The grady also has some really weird seats on it, like fighter pilot seats. What’s all that about?

What are legal limits for anchoring boats and leaving them?

I know this is usually more of a sailboat problem but do they need to be a certain distance from landings and marinas? Can police/coastguard/DNR tow them away?

I would think so, but I don’t know for sure. I didn’t alert any authorities, but I thought about it. Just to clarify, the sailboat in the top picture was underway

Looks like someone is cruising the intracoastal waterway. That boat has the look of a live aboard all though a lot smaller than any one I’ve ever seen. Sometimes people tie up a dinghy to go on a shopping run but that shouldn’t take more than one afternoon. One time I took my boat to Savannah. When you are on a long run you wish you had a super-deluxe captains chair like that boat has!

Exactly. They probably went shopping, ate in a restaurant and got a motel room and took a shower. Been there, done that, bet they are gone tomorrow.

Why would you do that? There are a whole lot of people who move up and down the Intracoastal with the seasons, in all kinds of boats.

I didn’t, but as mentioned above there might be some regulations as to where you can dock your boat unattended. It’s kind of rude to tie up for an extended period of time at a public ramp let alone anchor right next to it. Imagine if everyone thought it was okay to park your boat at a ramp for 24 hrs… The ramp would be unusable.

the boat with the yaks has been there about a week or so. I see it every time I go over the bridge. I thought the same thing, that it was a live aboard. Odd spot, considering the currents can rip through there.

You are not allowed to anchor in the channel of the ICWW so as to obstruct navigation of a federally maintained navigation channel. If out of the channel, DNR will give you some time.

I’ve noticed the same thing near the Thomas boat landing (aka Leeds) on the Ashley near I526. There never used to be boats moored there but now there seems to be 10 or more.

A lot of drifters move up and down the ICW, moving north in the spring and south in the fall. Many will stop somewhere and pick up a little work for a week or 2 to fill up the fuel tank and buy some food, then they move on again.

The coast guard was talking about it on channels 16 and 22 today. Putting out notices to everyone that a boat was anchored near the landing. I

I know what I’d do with my leftover bait if I saw a boat tied up to a boat launch unattended… somebody has to learn some etiquette.

Fwiw, last time I drove by Wappoo, I think that boat was gone, but I agree the number of boats around Thomas landing has increased as well. I have no problems with people cruising the icw and stopping by from time to time. Heck, I’d love to do that myself! I just feel anchoring could be done more prudently than right next to a boat landing with your dinghy tied up to the ramp dock as well. If the same dinghy was tied up at Shem creek ramp, it’d take up half the dock! I guess there may not be an actual law stating to maintain a certain distance from public ramps, but there should be a little common sense involved. There are plenty of less frequently traveled and safer areas to anchor and also many marinas around that probably have dock space for rent for a night or two.

Noticed the sail boats in the grass by Leeds Ave landing. There was a guy in West Ashley trying to sell a couple of sail boats he had anchored out there. Looks like he gave up and abandoned them. Don,t know what happened to the power boat that sank and rolled over next to the bank.

A new one showed up at Leeds earlier this week. It’s a green sailboat. It has already broken free once and drifted under the bridge and up in the marsh on the W. Ashley side. Who would be liable if it had drifted over on the N. Charleston side and damaged a boat tied up at someone’s personal dock?

The owner of the boat is liable for damage caused by a vessel, as well as responsible if the vessel ends up sinking or aground in the marsh. SCDNR and SCDHEC/OCRM can enforce abandoned vessels in all tidal areas. The USCG will enforce if it is in a federal navigation channel.

Boat is now tied up at folly. It is not obstructing the dock.

They must move fast!!
