Ok, an indication of my rookie-ness.
I see people refer to fishing the 500 line, or the 300 line, etc.
Can someone explain this language to me? I have assumed it is reference to charts, but what type of chart and how do the lines propogate? I am guessing that they are longitudal but I thought that there was only 360 degrees.
Is is it a reference to Loran or some other type of orientation?
Please explain in laymans terms if possible.
Tks

That had crossed my mind but I have heard the “500 line” correlated to 150 degrees on the compass.
I hope it is as simple as that but is it as simple as depth contour?
I have heard it said in the context of “I was fishing in the 500’s” as in depth but I have also heard “I was fishing on the 500 line”, are they the same meaning?
sorry for the repeat but just want to understand it clearly.
Thanks again.

Thanks 23 but I had already reviewed that prior to posting. It discusses theory and a lot of other info but I did not come away with the answer I was looking for.
I guess it would be easier for me if someone could giveme some correlated references, as in 150 degrees = 500 line (if that is correct) and some other points of reference.
Or simply put, where can I find a chart that depicts the “grid”?

I have a Maps Unique chart of offshore Chas and it has lat/lon on one side and an identical chart except with Loran-c on the other. The “lines” you hear about are “60” lines of loran-c.They are almost exactly perpendicular with our coast(NW-SE)and if you give a pos on the vhf it is easy to give the line your on and the depth to pinpoint your pos w/o having to say all the lat/lon #s.Most of us have heard all this so much that we can tell where you are w/o looking at the chart if we know your “line & depth”.Get the chart and I promise this will all make sense to you.Good luck out there and don’t get lost.
Thanks Capt. I have a Maps Unique, I will study it tonight.
pretty comfortable with navigating with compass and sun (in daytime obviously), but would like to understand the lingo. As you have pointed out, it would be nice to understand what other Captains are talking about when they reference line numbers.
Thanks again.

This should help. The numbers you are hearing are the lateral lines. No one includes the 59 or 60 number just the last 3. When someone says they are on the 550 line in 150 feet they are close the the Edisto banks.
Hey scootin I wish you would get on the “bolt on” and teach the good cappy how to use his electronics…we got 20gs in dash clutter and he still uses that garmin. btw rode that tower at 30 kts the other day.

Sounds good! We need to go again, I learned alot about that boat on the side of I26.
Got to be careful with captain Goober Grape. Them Canadians are use to ice fishing not blue water.
